Description
An ULTRA RARE Lp from 1955, this is the George Wallington Quintet at the Bohemia, “featuring The Peck”, Progressive High Fidelity PLP 1001 (first and only pressing), recorded at the Cafe Bohemia in New York City, September 9, 1955. In addition to Wallington on piano (who began his career in 1944 at the age of 17 playing with Dizzy Gillespie at the Onyx Club), this milestone album features the young (and soon to be famous) musicians Jackie McClean on alto sax, Donald Byrd on trumpet, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Condition is not terrific, but it’s extreme rarity makes it worth considering for any serious jazz collection. Cover is vg-/vg, no writing, but top seam is split almost to the spine (which is taped along its edge with silver duct tape). The front is laminated which is starting to peel along the edges, with losses of paper at the corners. The back is not laminated, with scuff wear and some paper loss along the bottom edge. Disc and labels are a bit nicer. Labels are very clean with only a touch of spindle wear. Vinyl is visually vg/vg+ with short, light scratches and good shine/luster. A very slight edge warp causes a slight rumble at the beginning of track 1, side one, and (unfortunately!) a repeat/skip at the beginning of track 1, side 2. A slightly heavier tracking weight might help the track to play through. Everything else plays VG++ or better. There is no background noise/crackle in the quiet spaces between the tracks and the music is surprisingly clear and clean. One measure of the album’s scarcity is the value placed on it in the Goldmine Price Guide to Collectible Jazz Albums, 1949-1969 (1994 edition): VG+ $660 NM $1000. All George Wallington albums are rare. This is the rarest of the rare. Reasonable starting price with no reserve.
