The Beatles- Please Please Me (Original Australian Gold/ Black Mono Parlophone pressing)

Well- here it is! This is the rarest of the Australian pressed Beatles albums. Very few copies of this edition were made- as few as 500, according to experts.

Originally- the first to hit the shelves (possibly, several hundred in number) here were a 'patch up' of an English cover, and Australian made record. This was because they did not expect any success from this album, given what they perceived to be poor sales on the first singles (silly people!).

This is the first all Australian made issue- dating from October 17th, 1963. It ranks amongst the most collectible LPs from this era, ever made in Australia.

As I said- very few of this edition were made. It was very quickly replaced by a different issue, made in greater numbers- the difference being, that on the vinyl label, this issue reads "Made in Australia for the Parlophone Co Ltd Sydney", while the later- December 1963 Gold/ Black label reads "Made in Australia by EMI (Aust) limited)".

Copies of this edition rarely surface. The covers were made very badly, and getting one without a ringmark or splits is nearly impossible. This one- as you've seen, undoubtedly, has been patched up with masking tape (inside you can see that the bottom seam was badly split before they did this), but the vinyl plays very nicely on all tracks (detailed grading below). 

I have done my best to show all detail on front and back covers, plus labels for verification that this is indeed the 'Real McCoy'!. If you have any questions, do not hesitate in asking. One of the other main details for verifying the difference between this cover edition and others, is firstly- the UK 'patch up' edition was made with black ink on rear; and this Australian one has blue ink- secondly; later Australian reissues from the 60s also had a stereo option listed on the top right hand side of the rear- where the serial number for this mono edition- PMCO 1202- is listed. (and for those interested- the Black/ Yellow mono editions began in March 1964).

This is a serious collector's item- in very playable condition, ata  ridiculously low starting price!

CONDITION (see descriptions below) VG (has some minor scratches and scuffs, but plays very well on all tracks- from the sound here, could easily be VG+)

Cover- see pictures. Worn- with masking tape around edges. On close inspection, you can see there was a split in the centre of the spine, with the bottom seam being worn through and split in a couple of places. Top seam had a split beginning from the opening. There is a ringmark, front and back, and some other minor stains and discolouration on rear.

It is worth noting that postage may work out cheaper if you are buying mutliple items- I work out all combined postage by weight, not on a per item basis. That way you have the best chance to get a good deal on postage rates, wherever you live. Grading/ condition descriptions.

ABOUT THIS GRADING SCALE: it is meant to reflect both the appearance and sound quality of the LP in question. If I ever have doubts re. grading, I play test the item in question. I endeavour to keep my vinyl clean, and so an LP rated EX, for instance, should play that way without you having to clean it first! I try to be careful and tough with my grading (as I hate it when I buy LPs online that don't meet what I think these grades are!), but if you are not satisfied for any reason- please contact me!

Those of you that are perfectionists should not be disappointed with anything in the scales between MINT and EXCELLENT, but if the item is below that rating, please read the descriptions carefully! 

I occasionally use a + or - to show if the LP is on the high or low side of that grade. That does not mean, however, that an EX-, for instance, is the same as VG+.

MINT: new/ unplayed. I only give this grading if I can verify that it is unused. LPS that look flawless, without that verification will be MINT-

NEAR MINT Very minor flaws/ very few fine lines or imperfections. In general- will look& sound great

EXCELLENT Minor flaws/ wear such as fine lines, fine scuffs, or minor scratches that will have a minimal impact on play response.  Sound quality should be great!

VERY GOOD Will have flaws such as scuffs, scratches, wear or other marks, but these will not be significant enough for the record to play badly. In fact, typically an LP with this grading will play and sound fine- no probs for those of you who like to listen to your vinyl; just not recommended for those of you that are perfectionists. Take note of any additional comments I might make with items of this grade- especially if they are below the VG+ level. They will usually be scuffier below this level.

GOOD An LP with this grading will have significant scratches, scuffs or other wear. I only will list items with this grading if obscure or of significant interest, and in this case I will play test it and give a detailed response to how well it plays in the general item description above. Usually an LP with this grading will play OK, but could have louder crackles, and/or clicks; depending on variablility between turntables there could be tracking issues too.

About ME: My husband and I are both collectors of music, books, tapes, CDs and other interesting retro items, and usually only sell when we have stockpiled enough stuff we are no longer interested in, to make it viable. Usually we are just happy buying rather than selling!!
