MORE INFO ON THE ARTIST & RELEASE-

Tripping Daisy is a neo psychedelic pop rock band that was formed in Dallas, Texas, USA, by lead singer/guitarist Tim DeLaughter in 1990 along with Jeff Bouck (drums), Wes Berggren (guitar) and Mark Pirro (bass). In 2017, the band announced they would be reuniting.

History

First album

After playing local gigs, the band released their first single, "Lost and Found", which received moderate airplay on local radio station KDGE. The band incorporated a light show similar to The Joshua Light Show at the Fillmore East. It used effects such as hand made slide shows with multi layered 16 mm projections along with oil and water. This visual attention was present in their very first show and was the beginning of many multimedia attractions to come.

The band soon began recording what would become their first full-length album, Bill, released on the independent label Dragon Street Records. The album was a favorite on Dallas radio. The sound on Bill is characterized by the heavy use of vocal effects and unconventional riffs, both of which lend to a neo-psychedelic sound. Bill was re-released on major label Island Records, with a different mix and mastering from the Dragon Street version. It also excludes the cover song "Green Tamborine".

In 1992 Bryan Wakeland replaced Jeff Bouck as the band's drummer. The band released a live album in 1994 titled Get It On. The album closes with a cover of the Bad Religion song "We're Only Gonna Die". DeLaughter has been noted as saying in 1990s era interviews that the record label pushed the live album out to capitalize on the popularity of Bill, and it is not one of his favorite albums.

Commercial breakthrough

After signing a deal with Island Records, which re-released Bill, the band recorded their first major-label release, I Am an Elastic Firecracker. The music video for the song "I Got a Girl" received extended airplay on MTV. A segment of the video was used in a Beavis and Butthead episode, a show known to lampoon popular music videos of the time. Wakeland remained in the band until after the tour for I Am an Elastic Firecracker when he chose to leave, and was replaced by Mitch Marine and Cory Lemons. Phil Karnats joined the band on lead guitar soon after Wakeland's departure, allowing DeLaughter more freedom to focus on lead vocal duty.

I Am an Elastic Firecracker is the second album by Tripping Daisy, released in 1995. It was produced by Ted Niceley, best known for his work with Fugazi. It featured the band's biggest hit, "I Got a Girl", whose video received extensive airplay on MTV. The album was certified Platinum in Canada on May 1, 1998.

Cover Art

The album's cover art features a photo of Itailian artist Guglielmo Achille Cavellini. The photo originated as a piece of stamp art by E.F. Higgins.

A COUPLE OF REVIEWS FROM AMAZON.COM

  • One of the best

ByBuzz Bradleyon January 24, 2005 Format: Audio CD This album sits right in the middle of my top ten albums of all time. Musically, the guitar playing, drumming, and vocals are all top notch and give you plenty to aspire towards. While at times some of the guitar lines are nothing technically amazing, they are creative and fit perfectly with the song. The drumming is the gem on this album and I love every minute of it. The vocals are uniquely Tripping Daisy's own and make this band stand out from the crowd.

Part pop, part hard rock, and mostly a perfect blend of the two, this album provides you with enough types of sound to keep you interested, but keeps them woven together so that it does not sound out of place.

"I Got a Girl" is of course the "hit" from the album, and by all means is the only reason I heard of this band in the first place. But I must say, "I Got a Girl" is the worst song on the album even though it has its moments instrumentally speaking. My favorites are "Motivation" - much quiter than most songs on the album but just beautiful in every way, "Step Behind" - very fun catchy song, but unique in its structure/arrangment, "Prick" - long prog rock style song with sick guitar riffs and some of the most amazing drumming on the album, and "High" - a nice peaceful song with some beautiful guitar lines which I have been told, although cannot confirm, was not originally a song to be on the album, but just a bit of a jam in the studio that was caught on tape, who knows (the lyrics to this song are the only ones missing in the album notes)?

That being said, every song is worth listening to and I have played this album start to finish in entirety hundreds of times. Other Tripping Daisy albums are good and worth listening to, but none of them capture the mix of hard rock, pop, and psychedelic sounds like this one does.
  • i'm too good to be all alone ByS. R Robertsonon May 28, 2003 Format: Audio CD This is one of the first cds I ever got into, it pretty much introduced me to alternative music when I was about 13 (along with They Might Be Giants, Radiohead, and Frank Black; I had an unusual childhood, my college sisters were my main source of growing up alternative). My sister probably bought it for that "I Got A Girl" song, which was good but simple enough to achieve accesibility. Anyway, it was a real good experience listening to this, pretty good for a kid just starting to grow up back then (like Nirvana and Sonic Youth are for alot of young slackers). "High" is a great Sonic Youth meets Phish simple peice of psychadelica that is beauty in its purest...it makes me wanna cry every time I hear it. The rest of the cd is filled with a signature mixture of weird unique vocals over abstract alternative rock jams and avante garde experiments. "Noose", that song that starts out with "Well, i'm on my way...", and "Piranhas" are other favorite tracks. The title and cover art are great, original as well. I'll probably get JESUS HITS soon. Good psychadelic alternative indie rock, up there with Pavement, Sonic Youth, Stereolab, Smashing Pumpkins, Mudhoney, whatever
