Here's a great little unassuming baroque pop album from 1968 by the Young Idea, "With a Little Help From My Friends" on the UK MFP label. There are two boys in the Young Idea, Douglas Macrae Brown and Tony Cox, and on the cover, they're dressed pretty nattily in the latest Granny Takes a Trip gear and sitting in a colorful field of autumn leaves. One of 'em looks an awful lot like a young Ronnie Lane, so based on the cover, you're not quite sure what to expect inside - are we talking pastoral pop like the Kinks Village Green, mod freakbeat like the Small Faces, or psychedelic excess like July or Tomorrow? Well, turns out, the boys have a lot more in common with the Left Banke and early Bee Gees - really slick, beautiful harmony baroque pop with grand arrangements and beautiful harmonies - stuff that would really appeal to you Fading Yellow fans! "The Games Men Play" is pure harmony pop given a nice shakin' Latin rhythm - great fun! "Mister Lovin' Luggage Man" is a CLASSIC of the genre - great baroque Left Banke style pop that starts out just like that band's masterpiece "Desiree". It's grand orchestrated sweeping BIG pop with swirling orchestra, rich and full production, and beautiful melody - they nailed it on this one. "In Bond Street" takes us to some Swinging London back street, obviously filled with expensive boutiques that the 60's dolly birds would go mad over, and shuffles along nicely on a lilting melody with light orchestration and some slightly psychedelic minor key touches that once again give it that Left Banke/Bee Gees popsike touch. "I'd do anything for you" the boys sing, "I would change the world for you...and maybe in a week or two, I will buy you pretty things in Bond Street." How's that for slightly reevaluated promises within the same VERSE??? Okay, maybe not CHANGE THE WORLD, my dear, but buy you a dress, THAT I can do. "Room With a View" I'm pretty sure was released as a single, and in a perfect world, WOULD have landed these boys a HUGE pop hit. It's super catchy in the BEST way, big dramatic pop with a breezy, bright and clean-cut sheen, simply perfect and irresistible. They shoulda been big stars, I tell ya, but in the end, they put out a great pop album, and if you haven't checked this one out yet, and you've bought all 8 or so volumes of Fading Yellow, you NEED this album.
