Brief Info: The final Traffic album until a 1994 reunion, a very modest seller with only a 31 peak position in the UK album charts. A quality set, a little downbeat at times and less lauded than some of their previous work but more than worthy of the Traffic name. This a fantastic copy from a barely played collection I have been offering recently – the cover especially is unlikely to be beaten.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): and arguably undergraded at that. A single unlaminated format with matt textured surfaces making it very prone to wear. Printed and made in England and includes the card lyric inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Simply stunning and practically off-the-shelf new. A couple of faint hairline spine creases, that apart, nothing to fault – this is practically reference standard.

Cover Back: Same again, practically flawless.

Top Edge: Unworn, as made.

Bottom Edge: Mint, nothing to add.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, ultra sharp with no wear at all, guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression traces minuscule. All text is perfect and unworn.

Corners: All immaculate with no rubbing and they retain practically mint as made shape.

Cover Summary: An archive all-round example of this very fragile mid-70’s cover, one that will prove near impossible to find better. This beautiful item should please all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): an unlined card illustrated and lyric inner sleeve. A couple of ultra fine and faint surface semi-creases that hardly even show. That apart, almost as new with edge splits or rubbing. The deeply recessed top opening edge is pristine, crisp and very sharp.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light and faint. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality Island record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Both record, cover and inner sleeve will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
