Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. PLEASE NOTE: I will NOT send any item, no matter what its value without a Royal Mail or courier tracking number. ALL my items must be signed and traceable to comply with Ebay delivery rules. Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any of the tiny few spindle traces very light, fine and faint with no wear around the hole area. Another classic album owned from new by one owner and appearing very lightly played.

Rarity: Scarce, and due to its popularity, rare in better, lightly played condition. Most will know the state these popular 1960s mono records show up in. Many heavily and deeply scratched, the grooves worn and rendered unlistenable. Covers torn, dulled, grubby and creased. This one on the other side of the vinyl spectrum. It appears very modestly played and still offers impressive sound with little unwanted. Just five light clicks at the very end of ‘Dear Doctor’ with four of them on the joining groove from a small mark, and little else. The cover still lovely as-seen.

Brief Info: Album number seven and back to the style they were best known for after very psychedelic ‘Satanic Majesties’, that received more mixed reviews. Now back in favour with critics, this was very well received and many regard it as one of their very best. It was the last full album prior to the death of Brian Jones, it peaked at No 3 in the UK album charts. Two classic songs open each side in ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ and the hit single ‘Street Fighting Man’, but all songs are gems. It has quite a raw, full-on production by Jimmy Miller and arguably, heard at its very best in mono. This a lovely copy with few blemishes, it plays impressively and the cover is really lovely and hardly aged. Such copies, especially in mono where record players were far more harsh to the grooves, are difficult to find. Stating the obvious, most who bought records at this time, did so to play them, and mostly many times, and few bands were more popular than The Rolling Stones. Clean lesser played examples of this are rare and this a very fine opportunity.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better. Although laminated front and back, it’s one that does not wear well, the spine especially is often seen tatty, mainly due to being a little wider than average and the internal fold hinge raised causing ridges and flattening. A gatefold format, the inside faces are matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. Includes the 3-69 date-coded inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: This a really lovely and age-defying example, the only issue of any note, the spine has flattened a little with tilt to the right. But compared to some I have seen, even this has fared well and still quite neat. Both sides retain excellent shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and any dulling under light, light. Mild dulling around the rim area on the back rarely avoided as the barest minimum. Also this has minimal creasing at all, with any of the tiny few hairlines near the edges with just one fine light half moon on the front near the centre. It hardly registers, seen under light again. The white main areas still looking fresh and without the heavy toning or yellowing many acquire over time, any ageing in that respect light and few will appear much better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside with any creasing or dulling to the matt surfaces little and very light. Also being dark, the lack of handling marks is more good news.

Top Edges: Both straight, flush and flat with full laminate retention which remains smooth, unpeeled or chipped.

Bottom Edges: Same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp to ever very sharp with any thickening little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Due to the spine being tilted, these are no longer flush with the front overhanging the back a little, but still parallel and neat. Few will avoid this trait being honest.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal actual compression, but it has flattened a little which, as stated, few will avoid. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together (bar the right due to the tilt), and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn under the mostly solid and relatively uncracked laminate. Any traces of peeling minimal and mostly the laminate retains solid. I have seen some of these with spine totally devoid of laminate, the bare card surfaces grubby and aged, often with the text eroded. That puts an intact spine like this into real perspective, yes, a little flattened, but still quite neat with any recessing light meaning the text is unsunken and easy to read.

Corners: Any tip rubs small and light with very fine shape retained with no heavy knocks. Just the odd tiny gentle tip crease (bottom right), and that being critical.

Cover Summary: A very strong and fresh looking all-round example of this quite unforgiving 1960’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: as per usual, marked down a little for natural paper darkening which is around moderate. It has two pristine window circles and the polylining neat and still quite clear. Minimal creasing and all edges intact with no repairs. This is date-coded 3-69 (March 1969). It has the pre-decimal price of 22/6 (£1.12.5) written small and neatly on one left top corner.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or close to. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed on robust thick quality Decca vinyl. A copy appearing modestly on all the evidence with any surface marks mostly light, some wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. Just one small fine mark emits the five light clicks mentioned further up, and four of those on the joining groove. Viewed in average room light few register. Visually a lovely vintage mono record that should please many collectors, but not quite for the purists or connoiseurs who only want ‘perfection’ at any cost. With titles like this, that is a very difficult ask.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Stones classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. Quite a raw full-on recording that has similar sound to their earlier albums, less refined than the previous album. Any surface sounds are minimal and any other ticks very few – the odd sporadic one here-and-there are very difficult to avoid totally. Five as now mentioned again, at the end of ‘Dear Doctor’ as the song finishes, with four on the joining groove and only quite light. Overall a fine clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises, a typical quality Decca-made record. Few available copies will outperform this early unboxed mono pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard stereo system. I am certain this record has been played only quite lightly and has been generally well stored and mostly carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Little of any great note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful album, still one of their very best for me. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended for many fans and collectors –but not quite for absolute perfectionists.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
