Label/Format: Fly – original ‘Fly’ format on side one, and the beautiful customised Bolan and Finn graphic on two. These have a matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a few fine spindle marks on side one (the fly side), and struggling to see any all on the graphic side. Fly is one of my favourite label designs, and to have such a superb picture of Bolan and Finn on side two makes for the perfect combination for this legendary album.

Rarity: Scarce as a complete first issue. All elements of this album are hard to find in decent conditions and many examples seen are trashed with heavy usage, parts missing or badly damaged. This is a very fine example with full descriptions further down. The record plays very well and appears little used.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Bolan, Finn, Currie and Legend at the start of their glam-rock popularity, they could do little wrong at this time and Electric Warrior is arguably their greatest album ever. Now regarded as a genuine ‘classic’, this album sold well and reached No 1 in the album charts. Bolan’s near nonsense lyrics never sounded better, he made them sound like poetry. Including two major hit singles in ‘Jeepster’ and ‘Get it On’, this could not fail – and didn’t. This, along with Ziggy-era Bowie was British glam-rock at it’s very best. Backing vocals are provided by Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, former Turtles and then members of Zappa’s Mothers of Invention. An album getting increasingly difficult to find in any form, the early originals with the stickered cover, inner sleeve and poster especially so. Many were bought by teenagers of the time and they got played into submission and mostly played on very basic record players. Do not under-estimate how challenging this rarity is to find complete like this.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): a single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. This has the original poster promotion sticker on the front (as seen in close-up). This was fairly quickly omitted from later copies and many owners would have removed it when purchased, thus some early covers are seen with sticker tears and marks. Printed and made in England by the Garrod & Lofthouse. The poster and inner sleeve are both included.

Cover Front: Not to put too finer a point on it – this cover is VERY hard to find without often significant and heavy wear. Black and gold ink and unprotected with a thick record inside are a sure-fire recipe for ring wear and rubbing. This front has little wear overall, a few mostly fine surface creases with any marks or blemishes few and very light. The lack of rubbing and even handling marks are both major pluses, as is the truly near mint sticker which is probably the very best I have ever seen to date. Faint rub traces to the edges here-and-there and to the impossibly difficult corner tips. A front that sets a high standard.

Cover Back: The back is a little down on the front, but in context, still very respectable. A little rubbing near the bottom left area, and a tiny rim arc near the top. Edges and corners as per the front with a little mildish burring to the left entrance edge. Still quite impressive taking into account what many, if not most are seen like these days.

Top Edge: Thin, but still very straight with minimal traces of wear or rubbing.

Bottom Edge: This has light to moderate, more consistent rubbing. Few black storage edges escape this and is pretty much expected.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, still quite sharp with little wear. A little thickening/burring seen on the back side as stated. This is guaranteed untrimmed, also, I can see no evidence of any enhancements to this cover. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A very thin spine, but still solid, straight with a little mild compression here and there, the ends are deeply pinched in manufacture. Minimal evidence of rubbing. Against the odds, the delicate gold text is almost fully intact, this clearer than some I have seen and quite easy to read – gold on black does not highlight the text so well. For good measure, the text is very well centred which is always nice.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing with mostly very fine shape retained with no knocks, thus tip creasing has been avoided.

Cover Summary: A highly respectable all-round example of this hugely unforgiving early 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. The inclusion of the scarce and attractive sticker a major plus, is any copy truly ‘complete’ without it?, and try to find a better one. This lovely detail looks immaculate. With a little wear on the back and rubbing on the bottom edge, not for the cover perfectionist, but many collectors have no qualms in being reminded of age, and at 45-years-old, this has fared generally well, given just how uncompromising these surfaces are. It should please many fans and collectors alike.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): an unlined and fragile inner and superbly illustrated with pictures of Bolan and Finn. With a typically heavy record inside, these do not wear well either – so often with heavy edge splits, but this one is fully intact with NO repairs. This is a fantastic example, any hint of age minimal with any hint of discolouration gentle and faint. The lack of creasing and grubbiness massive pluses, this beautiful piece of double-sided art will prove immensely difficult to find better.

The Poster: NEAR MINT: unmounted or displayed, there are no pin-holes or tape marks anywhere. With many copies of this album purchased by teenage girls of the time, many were wall-hung, often ripped down, torn, damaged, or even discarded altogether. Even the plain back is clean and little aged with the odd faint trace of toning viewed point-blank. The paper crisp and folds solid with no creasing. For extra good measure, the poster is ultra neatly folded, so no overhangs which has helped preserved the razor-sharp edges. A large poster with the graphic looking superb, indeed this could be an ultimate upgrade for some and it’s just an achievement to even find it these days, finding one better could prove a near impossible task.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: this does this very modestly played record scant justice, a (+) was seriously considered. Any surface trace marks are very fine and faint and there are no stylus scratches. This splendid copy plays beautifully throughout. Clean, retaining impressive shine and heavily pressed. With two impressive labels and high audio quality, this will again will not prove easy to find better. An album often badly mistreated and heavily played on the most basic of record players which this has clearly avoided. A couple of ‘cutting’ marks that follow the grooves, these hardly unusual, but with no audio affect whatsoever. Given the popularity and the typical early purchasers of this album, this one has fared very well indeed and should please many collectors.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic popular album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. Taken as the full package – this is a very impressive example with only polite clues of age.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
