Label Conditions: Both in superb condition, very clean, fresh and attractive with any of the tiny few spindle marks light and faint. This classic album appears very little played.

Brief Info: The first album on the new Rolling Stones Record label and first to feature Mick Taylor as a full-time member replacing Brian Jones. A wonderful album and a true classic that includes the popular single ‘Brown Sugar’, along with varied material, some quite dark. Famed for it’s zipper cover which was based on an idea by Andy Warhol and designed by Craig Braun, many regard it as the greatest album cover ever made. Inside, and beneath the zip lies a pair of white pants and text ‘Andy Warhol – this photograph may not be etc’. This a standard zipper cover used for the UK copies, and even these are becoming increasing difficult to find without significant wear or damage. This is very fine all-round, complete copy.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: and arguably much better still, only marked down for the usual marks on the back from other zippers and a creasing on those delicate open parts above the zip. A single unlaminated cover with a third ‘dividing’ sheet of card piece inside. Matt finished with a real, fully working standard UK zip. Printed in England. Includes the insert sheet that was printed by Richard Davis Ltd and the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: First, the zipper, this is superb, fresh, clean and it works effortlessly up and down. This barely tarnished or aged – some do go rusty and even seize-up totally. This opens and closes perfectly with barely any resistance at all, the top grip part still very shine and unusually unaged. The main cover is clean and still quite fresh, importantly, fully intact with no repairs. A crease on the perilous small top open flap, but no tearing. A few other quite light surface creases with any marks few and light. No sticker issues or writing, overall, just enough to politely remind of age, but a very fine and fully intact front.

Cover Back: The back has a press mark in a similar position to the zip, that is very common indeed, in fact finding this cover with none is beyond difficult. A couple of other fine marks are also present, but overall, this has far fewer other zip blemishes that most I have seen. This the only reason for a more cautious grading, there is not much else to fault bar the odd gentle surface crease or two. To be clear, the long white mark on the right buttock is NOT a scratch, that is part of the artwork. Overall, the back has fared well and actually has less marks than many seen these days.

Cover Inner Sheet: From what I can see, this looks perfect with white pants and midriff artwork looking practically as made with text details mentioned above.

Top Edges: Some quite mild thickening or burring, but no tears or splits. The record enters on this top edge and rarely seen without a little wear. One hundred percent guaranteed untrimmed with NO repairs.

Bottom Edge: Again neat with any rubbing very light, the same for any thickening of this storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: This edge is closed and white, it again shows minimal hint of any wear and also remains straight and clean.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression light, the ends lightly pinched in manufacture. The text is almost fully intact, just a couple of minute clips to the catalogue number at the bottom. This very well centred as-seen, the only rubbing of any real note at the very ends.

Corners: Light to near moderate tip rubbing with the odd tiny tip crease. Very fine or better shape largely retained with no major knocks.

Cover Summary: One of the genuine cover greats, this does is strong justice, but some mild wear and blemishes that few ever escape. These covers were stacked or pressed together in boxes for distribution. So the zip pressed against the back of each other, finding one without marks on the back area is beyond difficult for this reason alone. Those open belt areas above the zip also get caught on protective covers or other albums in rack storage, meaning rips, creasing and even total removal of these parts. To any intact example without major damage or severe marks is more unusual. Taking all into account, this should please many collectors, but not for perfectionists who only want ‘perfect’ at any cost.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain solid white, unlined inner has little wear, gently aged only with mild paper darkening. Any creasing light and little, all edges unsplit with no repairs.

The Insert Sheet: EXCELLENT(++): clean and crisp, uncreased with mostly very sharp edges, one tiny nick on the right edge of the red logo side near the top (look very hard). Little else to fault at all.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A lovely visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and solidly pressed with better than average weight. This record was often pressed very thin. Any surface marks or blemishes, few, fine and very light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. A copy appearing very little played on all the evidence. Overall, the playing surfaces look ‘purer’ and cleaner in manufacture than many I have seen. Often these appear dulled with impurities seen within the pressing, more like the budget labels of the time. With the oil shortage of the early 1970s, recycled or part recycled vinyl was often used which meant less than wonderful sound – all collectors of similar age to myself will remember these well. So often this album has major sound issues and inconsistencies. Ofter with loud crackle, pressing noises and even horrible loud distortions – and often on the cleanest looking copies. These hidden nasties can be all too apparent on this record and many collectors will know this. A very difficult one to find that will play well throughout, this was rarely, if ever pressed to the standard of their previous Decca catalogue. Overall, this one looks and plays very well with little unwanted, the surfaces with no dulling or spotting, so I am sure the vinyl purity was of a far higher standard on this particular copy. Knowing what many can sound like, I consider this a very fine example, and it should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I?offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This landmark classic album plays up to and most above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. A way cleaner than average pressing and one to be played and enjoyed. This has quite compact groove width, thus not the loudest of cuts, so it needs to be turned up (as the insert sheet suggests). It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and very detailed sound, better with higher volume. Any surface sounds are minimal, but the sporadic tick or crackle trace seems near impossible to avoid on this album, but few on this one. So the odd polite reminder of what is being played on this, and will occur on most from my experience. Certainly one of the better ones I have heard, there are no tracking issues* or penetrating stylus scratches. Many I have heard have had inherent crackle and Rolling Stones Records pressings generally were not as reliable as Decca. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly, and with due care, also generally well stored and carefully handled – often the cover marks were present even from new from covers being stacked atop of each other which meant the zips made marks on the back, all collectors would have seen this before. Little of any note, spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this evergreen classic, I really enjoyed my play-grade of this one. One to please many collectors and merits high recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
