Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a little above light, mainly fine and quite faint spindle marks on side two. Side one has hardly any, also no wear around the hole area. The record in superb condition and plays with fantastic clean sound.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Quite rare: Savoy brown albums did not sell in vast numbers are are not seen often. Also the unboxed label was changed in 1969 to the small boxed format making originals much rarer still with few made or sold, only appearing unboxed for a few short months.

Brief Info: A blues-orientated band in a similar mould to John Mayall and his Bluesbreakers, but their albums are far harder to find. This their third album with the vocal parts shared. It includes a few live songs as well as new studio tracks. Seldom seen on the unboxed format and this a superb original that appears very little played. This copy, bought from new by one owner as per the second album I am also offering, includes a lovely cover as well, this one including superb artwork. This one of the rarest originals in the Savoy Brown catalogue, this will prove very difficult to find better.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): actually looking better, just a little thicking on the opening edge. A single format with front Clarifoil laminate. This covers all the closed edges and ends on the back via the spine. The back is smooth, matt and unprotected. This now includes the back peep-hole mono/stereo indicator that appeared in 1969, here filled by the original blue inner sleeve indicating a stereo record inside. Printed and made in England by Moore & Matthes Ltd. Includes the original inner sleeve that the owner included extra information using typewriter.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent.

Lamination & Front: This a lovely cover and quite honestly looks even better than my overall grading. The laminate retains fine shine and clarity with a high degree of freshness. Any dulling only mild around the rim shape as seen viewed under angled light. There is a very fine spine edge lift – hardly uncommon with Clarifoil that tends to shrink more than other types – but no peeling or cracking. The main graphic looks superb as seen in close-up, this has very little to fault with any surface blemishes tiny and faint. A very small rub on the bottom right corner tip and minimal traces of wear on the exposed strip where the laminate ends naturally short, this with a little thickening, but mainly seen viewed end-on. So a front that has aged a little and looking very attractive indeed, the spectacular graphic will be hard to find better with an original unboxed record inside.

Cover Back: The back has faired very well indeed with any grubbiness to the predominately white surface mild and very light. Minimal creasing, marks or wear, the peep-hole also crisp and undamaged as seen in close-up. For a 45-year-old unprotected back, this still looks impressive.

Top Edge: Neat, straight with little wear at all, a gentle hint of fading near the top left being very critical.

Bottom Edge: Barely any wear to the main laminated folded edge, the back panel end a little thickened which hardly uncommon on storage edges this great age – again I am being somewhat critical.

Right Edge(s), and Type: These entrance edges have thickened but are still quite neat. Most evidence of this seen viewed end-on. These guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way, edges will thicken sometimes, a pure and natural fact.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression light, the ends are nipped in manufacture. The text all present and unworn, if centred a little low on quite a narrow depth. The laminate solid and uncracked with no peeling.

Corners: Small tip rubs on the right pair, little on the spine. Very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very attractive cover, only marked down a little for natural thickening of the entrance edges. My policy is always to leave things natural. With superb artwork and general excellent (or better) looks, this rare cover will please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: Difficult to put a grade on this as the original owner addded information with a typewriter, without it it wold be near excellent or thereabouts. Not too difficult finding the same style inner if deemed necessary, but I always include the original inner if at all possible, and this ‘modification’ arguably, adds character. A vintage polylined Decca blue inner for stereo records. A little aged with the usual darkening of the edge seam adhesive. Barely any creasing and all the closed edges unsplit with no repairs required. The window circles crisp and neat with the lining very clear indeed.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a super visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks very light, fine and faint as seen far more critically under bright angled light. No penetrating ‘needle’ marks and this plays with lovely clean sound throughout. Visually a super, and rare original unboxed record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality vintage blues album that experiments their sound still further, plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing as you would expect from Decca – for me, the very best UK manufacturer of top quality records. Few available copies will outperform this very early ‘B’ / ‘U’ stamper pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has not been abused on vintage record players of the distant past. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, only the second copy of this one I have ever had. Both record and cover will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
