Brief Info: The self-titled debut album from the legendary blues-era Fleetwood Mac from 1968. With the equally famous dog and dustbin cover artwork, this vintage album sounds nothing like the commercial AOR band that sold millions of albums in the latter 1970s and beyond. Fronted by Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer, vocals are shared by both. This was real British blues and on one of the most famous labels of the genre. It proved successful too peaking at No 4 in the UK charts even though it had no singles included. A beautiful very early heavy pressed stereo copy and it plays very impressively with clean, distortion-free sound. This is a gem for any blues fan and collector.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single format with the front laminated, this wraps around the top and bottom edges into the inside and not on to the back. The spine is not laminated, hence vulnerable and fragile. This is a mono cover with a huge ‘STEREO’ sticker on the back, clearly CBS thought the mono cover would outsell the stereo, so a stereo numbered cover was not initially printed. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd and includes the ‘Patent Pending’ text.

Lamination & Front: The main issue with this cover is a 1 inch scuff-rub on the top edge which is visible fron the front view. Minus that, this splendid cover would have been graded more Excellent(+), but a fact-of-life is, covers of this great age will acquire handling, storage or mishaps over time. But this one near out-of-vision mark distracts little from a very fine front. The laminate retains a nice shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting. A few surface creases, marks and gentle rim dulling seen more under light, but with normal full-on viewing looks attractive with only mild clues to it’s considerable age.

Cover Back: Very wear-prone indeed being matt black finished this is susceptible to fingermarks, rubbing and especially ring wear of which this has avoided. It has a fine scuff mark near the bottom right corner but not a great deal else to fault. The lack of creasing is another plus and the huge stereo sticker is in super condition. Clearly never removed or picked at, this looks real nice, as does the entire back really.

Top Edge: A moderate 1 inch scuff-rub to the right of centre, the most significant issue on this cover. Just down to the card on a couple of small areas but no split or repairs. This apart, not a great deal else to fault being mainly clean and straight, but obviously this could be an issue to some of the more discerning collectors.

Bottom Edge: Smooth and straight with little to fault at all.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with only a litttle thickening and minor burring seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge which is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: The spine has no laminate protection but still in very fine condition. Solid, quite straight, uncompressed with the text perfectly centred and all present and unworn. Any rubbing to the dark surface tiny and faint and to find the text so intact and strong is a considerable bonus as many like this are seen threadbare.

Corners: Light to near moderate tip rubs, most on the spine top with fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all round example of this famous late 60’s cover, even with the rub on the top edge, it could still prove difficult to find much better and that is no understatement. It has more positives than negatives, but not for the highly discerning cover enthusiast. Still somewhat above average example should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): a heavy-duty plain white polylined inner that is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. Two crisp and undamaged window circles and very clear lining with all edges unsplit with no repairs. A little aged with less than moderate discolouration, some crinkle and fairly light corner creasing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean with lovely shine, intense black and heavily pressed. Blue Horizon records fluctuate considerable in pressing weights, and this one of the heaviest I have held. Under bright angled light, light and very fine surface marks are seen, but no penetrating scratches and way fewer blemishes than you will find on most popular records you will find this considerable age. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This landmark blues record that introduced the world to this legendary band plays above it’s visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. My first listen to a stereo copy of this for some considerable time, but well worthy of the wait. Excellent production and impresisve clean separation makes for the most pleasurable experience, it delivers the music quite differently from the mono version of course. Any surface sounds are minimal, few and faint and the details on this thick heavy record are all beautifully preserved in this modestly played record. A clean pressing with no manufacture issues and tracking effortless. The light visual blemishes are ignored for outstanding quality sound and nothing of any note spoiled the play-grade. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and it should please many, if not most collectors, strong recommendation is merited.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
