Label/Format: MCA – a rare black and silver second MCA (pressed by Decca) format. These have matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light, equally fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. A great copy that plays impressively throughout.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. A very good solid weight, Decca rarely fail to deliver for quality.

Rarity: Scarce: in my opinion, this black label copy even harder to find that the diamond format. MCA were changing their label designs almost on a monthly basis in the early part of the 1970s, and this format was probably around the least amount of time. After the diamond run ended, along came this one, but very quickly changed totally to the MCA rainbow format and no longer pressed by Decca, although their subsequent albums were via Deram and then Decca were. The early copies of this debut album are vastly superior, but difficult to find. It took a little time before the band established themselves in the progressive rock market and few bought this first album initially. This is a lovely copy as well, it carries the same matrix details are the diamond label copy and sounds terrific.

Brief Info: Brilliant debut album from one of my favourite acts within the melodic prog-band genre of the early to mid-1970s. I saw them a number of times live and they were always magnificent. This went largely ignored on issue, hence the early pre-Rainbow MCA copies that were Decca pressed, are hard to find. It proved to be their only album for MCA, they were quickly signed by Decca via Deram and became quite successful for a decade with some superb albums. They initially supported other better known acts at the time, but quickly established their own high-brand reputation and regularly toured as the main act. A band always noted for the audiophile quality of their music, this album also impresses for top audio and production. I still consider the black MCA label one of the scarcest versions of the ever-changing MCA format, it came-and-went within possibly just a few weeks. Both record and cover are impressive and any Camel or classic prog fan are likely to enjoy owning this one.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: arguably better. An unlaminated single format with matt, smooth surfaces. This is made with thin card, hence quite fragile. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace. Includes the Decca style 1973 date-coded polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A cover seldom found this nice, this front is very impressive indeed with little to fault. Any marks or blemishes bordering on minuscule, and only tiny edge hairline creases that show little. Very gentle rim impression only and no sticker issues for which this is intolerant. The very best front I have ever seen on a MUPS 473 cover – remember, the later non-Decca pressings have a different catalogue number.

Cover Back: A gentle hint of ageing with a mild rim rub at the top with a little light patchy toning here-and-there on a revealing white surface. However the lack of creasing and still being generally clean with hardly any real wear makes for quite an impressive back.

Top Edge: Very thin indeed, but straight with barely any hint of wear.

Bottom Edge: Again thin and straight with only very light patchy rubbing. Impressive for a storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. When viewing end-on, the thinness of the card is immediately apparent.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with hardly any compression, a small few hairline creases, and the white surface a little darkened or toned with age. This having excellent shape and nothing like as thin as the other folded edges. All text is perfect and unworn and note, the correct first catalogue number at the bottom.

Corners: Any tip rubs small and very light. Very fine to excellent shape retained with no bashes or significant dinks or creases.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this fragile original cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. The front is exceptional and the back nice, it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: only marked down a little for the usual seam adhesive darkening which few will avoid. In the Decca style of quality, this is a heavy-duty polylined inner with two crisp undamaged window circles, and the lining still quite clear. Hardly any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Importantly, this has the 6-73 (June 1973) date-code.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: this being somewhat critical with only very fine wispy surface marks seen under bright light, there are no penetrating stylus scratches and this record plays impressively throughout. A lovely visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed on quality Decca vinyl. A copy with very modest plays on all the evidence and visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I?offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality prog album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this still very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
