Description

Very rare! Stiff Little Fingers - Suspect Device - 7" vinyl single - RIGID DIGITS 1st pressing - only 500 made. 1978.

This is a very rare record. Only 500 1st pressings were made and the picture sleeves were handmade, folded and glued with bits of double sided tape by the band themselves!

1st pressing red label with 'RIGID DIGITS RECORDS' and 'SRD - 1' catalogue number on the right. It is ultra rare as the B-side label, 'Wasted Life', has the hand written '2'. The band wrote this on the first few of the 500 pressings that were planned to go to radio stations to make it clearer to DJs which was side 2 of the disc.

I purchased this myself, when it was first released in 1978, from the infamous Good Vibrations record store in Belfast, owned by Terry Hooley (watch the Good Vibrations movie now on Disney +). I was part of the Belfast punk rock scene back then.

The sleeve is easily identified as the rare first issue: the red lettering of 'SUSPECT DEVICE' is on the top right corner and in a broken, distressed font style. Later sleeves have a more solid undistressed font and it's on the top left corner. On later sleeves the image on the front that depicts the large group of incendiary bombs is at a different angle and is a clearer, sharper image. On 1st issue sleeves, the image of the band on the back is printed in black only and has no grey tones and the sides of the image are irregularly shaped. On later issues the image is clearer with grey tones and is cropped with straight edges left and right.

I played this record to death back in the day so it's not in mint condition... but it is still in very good condition. There are a few visible surface scratches but not deep scratches. I don't have a record player, so it is untested.

The handmade sleeve is creased at the corners and is a bit grubby with some staining. There are a few minor tears. When you put the record in the sleeve it will come out the other side as the seam at the fold on left side has ripped. Some of the double sided tape that the band used to glue the sleeve together has lost it's 'stick' so it's coming apart... but this allows you to see the way it was originally stuck together by hand. Please study the photos closely to get a better idea of the condition.

A rare chance to purchase a rare record.
