- The very first 1977 MOTORHEAD delivers 8 tracks of speedy, grimy, blues-based rock ‘n roll: his stripped-down brutal variations of Hawkwind tunes he owned ("Motörhead", "The Watcher"), + his Lemmy-injected covers (Train Kept a Rollin’), and some tracks that would become live cornerstones (Iron Horse/Born to Lose, Keep Us on the Road).
Speedy Keen’s production captures the grime and grit of the time period, the bass tone still an ungodly thick, pulsing mass which would grow exponentially along with guitar tones and vocal snarl over subsequent releases. Guitar melodies still leaning a bit toward the psychedelic in the spacey leads of “Lost Johnny”. It’s easy to imagine this band stealing the attention and entourage from a headliner at a small club, but the muscle to back it up musically can’t be denied. Rock 'n roll would never be the same
