Label/Format: Harvest – with matt quite smooth surfaces, gentle fine texturing is clearly seen under light. These have EMI and UK rim credits.

Label Conditions, Rarity & Info: Both immaculate: ultra clean, fresh and attractive, I can see no spindle marks at all, I have no doubt this record has hardly been played. This a later 1970s copy, beautifully pressed and with brilliant sound quality, indeed this even surpasses most early copies I have heard. Those were often pressed on variable quality vinyl due to the oil crisis of the time, and also often heavily played on more basic record players. You want a copy almost as new and cleanly pressed, look no further. Also this copy includes what I consider to be the rarest cover variation. A heavily textured Garrod & Lofthouse made sleeve with the SQUARE corners. So often a big deal is made of round corner covers, well just about all copies you will find had them, but how many of these have the G&L imprint with square corners? These are way harder to find and seldom seen – also try finding a better example.

Brief Info: Pink Floyd’s seventh album and for me anyway, one of their finest. I have never felt this album ever gets the credit it truly deserves. This was music from the motion picture ‘La Vallée’. Including both vocal and instrumental tracks, all new and band-written, this could just as easy be a Pink Floyd album with no reference to film music, there are no dull filler tracks and Rick Wright’s wonderfully haunting keyboards are still utilised fully. Here a superb, little later example with audiophile quality sound from a hardly played and clean-pressed record. What really drew my attention initially was the immaculate textured cover, that includes the far rarer square-made corners. I have seen so few of these, and never one in such incredible condition. Initially I suspected it could be a foreign pressing – but no – every element of this copy is UK. This is near immaculate and will delight not only Floyd fans who want superb sound, but also an elusive cover variant for their collection. Apart from a little gentle fine bottom storage edge rubbing that few avoid, this cover is almost out-of-the-factory, and seeing this very familiar sleeve without the rounded corners, makes it a little special, because most-all had them.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated single format with rough textured surfaces and SQUARE corners. This has a very matt finish and the texturing quite rough like the earlier standard ones. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd and was designed by Hipgnosis. The EMI inner sleeve is also included.

Cover Front & Back: A difficult cover that is prone to just about all wear possibility. Both front and back immaculate: deep rich unfaded colour and the devoid of speckle to the rougher feeling surfaces. No creasing or ringwear, this is incredibly fresh and looks truly fantastic. The square corners are equally the same with no knocks or dinks at all with beautiful crisp shape and definition. This really is one to hold and admire.

Top Edge: Lovely and straight with the only rub, a tiny one to the right tip.

Bottom Edge: Light patchy rubbing as stated above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, razor sharp with any thickening or burring smaller than minuscule. Record entered on this straight edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Again, immaculate: solid, straight, without compression or wear. The surface unfaded and fresh with all the bold white text pristine, if just centred a fraction low in manufacture.

Corners: Four square corners with just tiny tip rubs to the right pair. Superb shape retained with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: A really beautiful Pink Floyd variant cover – being UK manufactured by G&L makes it extra special, I have seen so few of these, and never better. This should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): and arguably under-graded as such. A very clean fresh-looking EMI unlined inner. Any creasing fine and light with all edges unsplit with no repairs. Aged little with any discolourtion very light and gentle.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): and hardly sure why a minus. A superb visual copy that is very clean with lovely shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy maybe played once prior to my play-grade (if indeed at all). Even under light, hardly any blemishes worthy of note. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Pink Floyd classic plays up to its high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. It offers superb, totally distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear. Sound quality is impressively high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound – a typically Floyd hi-fi recording that will sound stunning on any worthy equipment. Any surface sounds barely even registered, in fact this is one of the best-pressed copies of this Floyd gem I have heard to date, early originals often crackle especially on the quiet passages, but this has barely anything unwanted and no tracking issues*. Few available examples, no matter what there era, will match or outperform this quality, very clean EMI pressing I feel sure. No pressing noises or distortions, all the vocals and music sharp and focused, even the difficult ending of ‘Absolutely Curtains’ has little to fault, and most fans will know this is a difficult area that concludes this album with its native chanting. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful album – I am almost reluctant to let it go. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and again can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
