Label Conditions: Both in super condition, fresh, clean and highly attractive with only a couple or three spindle marks. This delicate record plays beautifully with little unwanted.

Rarity: Moderately scarce especially in very lightly played condition. This was a late ‘plum’ issue with the label design and catalogue number changing within the same year. This a quite difficult record, that has some very quiet passages, clean originals that still offer quality clean sound are at more of a premium. The same for the cover, many are badly rubbed and worn, this one nice with only some patchy rubbing on the spine and edges. A few includes the prized ‘Head Hunters’ inner sleeve, and this copy has it as seen.

Brief Artist & Album Info: A brilliant late album on the Plum Atlantic format, this was Dave Crosby’s first solo album, falling in line with his fellow friends Steve Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young. Peaking at 12 in both the US and UK album charts this mini-classic was justifiably popular and remains his finest ever moment as a ‘solo’ artist. Not that solo is really the correct term here, as he is joined by the cream of San Francisco artists of this era. In no particular order; Crosby performs with all the following: Graham Nash; Neil Young; Phil Lesh; Bill Kreutzmann; Jorma Kaukonen; Grace Slick; Gregg Rolie; Joni Mitchell; Mickey Hart; David Frieberg; Henry Diltz; Paul Kantner; Michael Shrieve; Gary Burden; Stephen Barncard; Robert Hammer; David Geffen; Ethan Crosby; Laura Allen; Jerry Garcia; Jack Cassady, Ronald Stone and Elliot Roberts – as you would expect the backing and performances are nothing less than immaculate, a blend of musical brilliance seldom bettered on an album of this type. Vocally, Crosby was inspired and never sounded much better than here, spiritual, powerful and convincing, a man at the peak of his powers. The backing musicians are allowed space to perform and this is an unselfish record. This is a very strong copy that plays with lovely clean sound, that never to be taken for granted on this more delicate set.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with a very matt finish and quite smooth surfaces. The card is quite soft and fragile and is seldom seen without significant wear. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. Includes the ‘Head Hunters’ graphic inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Clean, fresh, hardly rubbed or creased. Just small tip rubs and the odd tiny trace near the edges. The lack of sticker issues on this surface always welcome news also. A wonderful graphic of a sunset with Crosby superimposed – this will rarely be seen better.

Cover Back: Same again, and devoid of ring wear, very nice indeed.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Hardly anything of note to fault.

Top Edges: Straight and flush with only quite light patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Similar again on the back edge, the front has little wear at all.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both the closed front and open back edges are clean and mostly sharp with very little wear, any thickening or burring tiny and light as seen viewed end-on. All are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: This has some patchy rubbing, mostly near the top and on the top fold which is patchy. Most text unaffected and mostly still present as seen. Still solid, straight with minimal compression, folded square so the edges meet up flush and parallel. Always a difficult cover to find without edge and spine wear, so overall, this has fared quite well.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubbing with very fine shape retained without any major knocks, or even dinks.

Cover Summary: Lovely piece of vintage art, and seldom will it be found a great deal better on the main areas. One to please many collectors

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): this copy includes it’s original ‘Head Hunters’ promotional inner sleeve, these quite collectable. Only a few select albums from the Philips pressed catalogue included them. The paper still clean with minimal traces of toning of the adhesive, the polylining intact. Little creasing with flipback construction, all edges intact with no repairs. These also often wear badly, the lack of ring wear also a plus. A very nice example that will prove difficult to find better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: this being critical, I am sure is a very lightly played record that offers impressive clean sound. A lovely visual example that is very clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. Any surface marks or blemishes are very light, fine and faint, these seen with scrutiny under bright light. Mostly wispy, there are no penetrating stylus scratches. Visually a strong example that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic Atlantic record plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. This a challenging album and few will ever play anything close to ‘silent’. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been quite well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

End Piece: Recognised by critics and fans as one of the genuine all-time greats, this was Crosby’s debut ‘solo’ album, and a very busy time for the man after first producing Joni Mitchell’s debut and teaming up with Stills, Nash and Young for other albums. This record is an extraordinary work by any standards and essentially a mood piece with Crosby using vocal and guitar chords to stunning effect, the final song even has an eerie Gregorian chant feel, an amazing finale to a sublime release. This album is a real treasure and I am delighted to offer such a fine all-round copy. A host of stars make this record very special – as well as being a late Plum album, it should appeal to scarce vinyl collectors anyway. For those who originally thought Dave Crosby is not really for them, think again, give this one a try, you WILL discover a man inspired, this is as uplifting as music gets. No music lover could fail to be moved by this.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
