THE LP IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL SLEEVE PRINTED WITH A LIGHT GLOSSY FINISH
Peter Hammill seems to alternate between releasing unpredictable work (the rock opera The Fall of the House of Usher, the electronic, experimental Loops & Reels, etc.), and his trademark style (straight-ahead arrangements for voice and one other instrument, usually guitar). And Close as This would fall into the latter category, since it's comprised exclusively of pure arrangements (in this case, voice and keyboard).
It's hard not to be impressed by the emotion in Hammill's voice on the songs "Other Old Clichés" and "Beside the One You Love." And like all of his past work, Hammill will often unite gentle music with sometimes overtly intense vocals ("Too Many Yesterdays").
The keyboards on the album have been (mostly) filtered through a computer, updating the classic Hammill sound laid-down on his earlier work, Chameleon In the Shadow of the Night.
Unfortunately he would not pursue this style for a while -- his next album, In a Foreign Town, would be the complete opposite of And Close as This, containing overblown production.
And Close as This, however, is one of Hammill's finest.

LABELS: Clean, bright and fresh labels with little signs of use - there is one light spindle trace on Side Two, none on Side One. The Side One label has a light circular mark (please see close-up photos) - the remnants of the original owners label but this has caused no damage, just left a very light mark - NEAR MINT / MINT
VINYL Visual: The record lies perfectly flat on the turntable and both surfaces retain their original deep, like-new, glossy sheen. There are one or two light pressing blemishes which would have been there since manufacture but these have no audio consequence - NEAR MINT
VINYL Audio: As close to MINT as you are likely to find as the record has barely been played. As usual with these mid-80s pressings the reproduction cannot be described as pristine, but it's pretty close and in my opinion it's the best you'll find. There are some light clicks/pops on playback at a loud volume (most prominent on the first track on Side Two but nothing major - and this is the side I would say has never been played). A beautiful LP and critically graded as NEAR MINT/EXCELLENT+ for audio and very highly recommended indeed to fans of Hammill's later work
SLEEVE: The sleeve is crisp, clean and fresh with no wear to speak of - NEAR MINT
INSERTS: Both the two page letter (dated October 1986 - which has SOFA catalogue and merchandising info on the back page) and the the typed lyric sheet are in practically untouched NEAR MINT condition
