Mike Absalom : Mike Absalom 1Y1 / 2Y1 1st Press Vertigo 1971
This relatively rare and collectable first pressing plays to a superb standard with very little intrusion. In fact the only obvious interference is five static ticks / light clicks at the beginning of S2. Apart from that the clarity and depth of the audio is very impressive. The vinyl is visually stunning also and has been preserved so well. It's an acquired taste this album but Vertigo added all sorts to their 'catalogue' didn't they! Indeed it was Patrick Campbell-Lyons, he of psychedelic Nirvana fame, that signed up Absalom. He obviously had some influence at the label!
The 6 panel poster cover does have some wear, mainly on some of the edges, but it remains in very good condition. The original Vertigo inner is in very good condition, close to Ex- though.

Visual description
The vinyl is in lovely condition and still has a very impressive glossy sheen with no marks or scratches. Under a bright light I can only see a small number of faint hairlines and there is nothing that stands out. There is no groove or surface wear and the run out grooves are very clean also. It's a superb example. The Vertigo labels have only a little spindle wear.
Play Grading
The acoustic intro on 'Saga Of John The Bog' plays perfectly and Absalom's opening vocal section has no intrusion either. This high end standard is kept up as it progresses with no clicks, pops or static. The vinyl it is visually in great condition but clearly it has been very well preserved also. the audio is - there is no underlying static and each note is so clean and so sharply defined. There is just one very light tick towards the end as the volume decreases but it is well worth a Mint- grading.
'Don't Tell It On the Telephone' plays with sublime clarity and definition through every section. There is just a hint of static distortion on the final louder telephonic chorus but that is hardly interference. Mint-
The intro on 'Let Me Give You Roses, Rose' plays to perfection and the same applies to the opening vocal. It continues in the same way with zero background. As quirky as ever this is Mint from start to finish.
'Old Woman In The Moon' again plays with incredible clarity and no interference. There are only a handful of minor statics and for a 54 year old record the 'clean' sound of the audio is remarkable. Mint-
'Saga Of Ernie Plugg's Bust' ends S1 with exceptionally clean audio once more. If I was being a little critical there is just a little inner groove distortion on the vocal but it's very minimal and in no way intrudes on the quality of the listen. One mega light tick also so I will grade as Near Mint- accordingly.

The piano intro on 'Saga Of Suzie Grapevine And Pusher Joe' has five static ticks and the opening vocal has just one at the beginning. The rest of this vocal plays very clearly with no intrusion and this clarity of sound is kept up until the end. I will grade the intro as VG and the remainder as Mint-
The intro on 'Frightened Of The Dark' has a handful of very light statics and one minor tick and the opening vocal then plays perfectly. This album is of course acoustic so any ticks or clicks would immediately be obvious so it's plain to see that this vinyl has been very carefully looked after and infrequently played. The clarity throughout confirms. This is a more melodic number (with a normal title!) and from start to finish there is no interference. Just a hint of vocal distortion perhaps every now and then but even distortion seems like too strong a word for it. I will say Near Mint
The upbeat 'Gaza Striptease' plays with imperious quality through every vocal and instrumental section. It could not play with any greater precision and Mint- is deserved.
'It Must Be Spring' again plays with such clean audio, I can hardly fault it. A quiet number that plays beautifully - the clarity and warmth is exemplary and the vocal 'sound' has no intrusion. I just 'picked up' a couple of minor statics in the middle section but they are barely audible. The very quiet acoustic section that ends the track plays with only a couple of very minor ticks. I still think Mint- is deserved here.
The intro on 'Saga Of Peaches Melba And The Hash Officer' is so close to perfect with just one mega quiet tick and the opening vocal is the same. It continues to play with very clean audio and the only 'issue' is a mild distortion on the vocal but believe when I say it is hardly intrusive. This is a 54 year old vinyl and final tracks are of course prone to this but it is kept to an absolute minimum here. 99/100 sellers would not even mention it! There are no ticks, clicks, pops or static and the overall 'sound' is very impressive even during the louder vocal passages. A Near Mint- conclusion in my opinion.
The Gatefold & Vertigo Inner Sleeve
The fold out 6 panel cover is in very good condition and it's only some of the edges that have some obvious wear / rubbing. To be fair it's only the spines and bottom edges of the front cover that is most affected. Aside from that it is very clean - the front cover has only minimal fading around the edges and one small very faint sticker removal mark in the top right corner. I've also just noticed a small scuff on the back cover but it's not too obvious and all the other panels are very clean with hardly any marking.
The original poly-lined Vertigo inner (dated 0671) is in very good condition at least. There are no side splits but it does have two small tears on the central aperture, minimal creasing only. It has some fading / age related marking around the edges and the cat number is also written in one corner.

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping. This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage. The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered. Any over-payment will always be refunded.
The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD). An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known. Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing. All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection. They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection. I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.
The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each. There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up! Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
