LED ZEPPELIN 1 - TURQUOISE LETTERING - A//1, B//1 - RARE 1ST PRESS
ATLANTIC (RED/PLUM) LABEL - 588171 - SUPERHYPE CREDITS
A rare opportunity to purchase this extremely hard to find and sought after 1st pressing of this superb album from Led Zeppelin. Serious collectors will know only a very limited number were released with the turquoise lettering on the sleeve and Superhype credits on the label for some of the songs. Recent (mint) copies of this album have been selling for well into 4 figures indicating its rarity value and popularity among Zeppelin fans.
Please read on for a completely honest description of this LP, which I will keep as brief as possible but will be happy to answer any questions if more detail is required.
PLEASE NOTE - this album has been tucked away on my shelf with other albums for decades so there is no doubt as to its authenticity. I was not aware of its rare value until recently and as I am not a serious record collector myself, I reckon others would get more joy from its ownership.
MATRIX:
Side 1 - 588171 A//1
Side 2 - 588171 B//1
Vinyl: Signs of obviously being played a fair few times but no serious deep scratches, chips or tape marks or such, just the odd hairline scratch (the longest going through track 1 and just into track 2 on side 1 without noticably affecting the sound), plus a few smudges.
Label: When held to the light you can see the odd smudge and spindle marks, otherwise the label is clean and intact with no tears or scuffs. PLEASE NOTE however that there is a 1 inch Dymo tape on side 1 with the name of the first owner (an old friend). This can be seen on the image above, with name smudged out. It could probably be removed safely but I didn't want to take the risk.
Sleeve: Signs of wear and tear and useage. Laminate intact but creased in parts. Some discolouring and scuffing at edges, especially at the open edge.
Inner Sleeve: Believed to be the original, white with polythene inner. Made in England and British Patent numbers showing, plus box with wording warning of the dangers of plastic bags. Shows discolouring (browning through age) around beyond the circumference of the record, which is indented in parts into the inner sleeve. No rips, tears, writing or other markings.
Sound: I am being extremely honest when i say this. On first play of this album, after years of it being stored with other LP's on a shelf, the sound was spoiled by a fair bit of crackle and the odd pop. After getting some expert advice I gave the record a good clean and have to say it sounded much better but not freed of all the crackle and pops, which a good professional clean should sort out. Other than that the sound is superb with great warmth, depth and separation and the crackles only really evident during the run ins and extremely quiet sections (not that there are many of those). I was torn between getting it cleaned myself before putting it on here, thus probably making a lot more money for it, or leaving that to the succesful bidder who probably will know much more about that kind of thing than I. I opted for the latter thus providing the buyer the opportunity to obtain this record at a better price than normal, even after splashing out on the cleaning. Obviously I can't guarantee anything in that regard so buyer beware of course.
If it is clinical sound quality you are after you will know now that this is not the one, it is however the perfect opportunity for serious collectors of Led Zeppelin rarities to get a hand on this extreme rarity at a sensible price.
