 When released in 1973, the first 100,000 units were on virgin gold vinyl  as is this long out of print re-issue. Grand Funk was the only group to release their albums on virgin vinyl. It was sign of things to come for the band and was truly the most successful year for the group, which they needed after dumping Terry Knight and embroiled in lawsuits and fears that maybe they wouldn't succeed but they did. Although more POP then previous albums, this was a Grand Funk album no doubt; introducing the songwriting abilities of Don Brewer (who had co-written other songs previously, but this album has songs written only by him). It was more upbeat then the previous "Phoenix" album and had a party theme to it, yet Mark Farner did contribute a soul-searching song on how American Indians are treated in " Loneliest Rider". It's the second album with keyboardist Craig Frost now a full fledge member of the band, posing nude with the rest of them on the inside gatefold of the cover. "The Railroad", "Stop Looking Back" along with the Mark Farner signature type song "Ain't got Nobody" with the hits "Walk Like a Man" and of course "American Band"

This no-nonsense band from Michigan defined the sound of early working class Hard Rock groups with their over-the-top sound, Mark Farner's heavy riffing, hard-hitting bass lines of Mel Schacher and intricate funky drums of Don Brewer.

The Live: The 1971 Tour recordings were made during ecstatic performances in Chicago, Detroit and New York's Shea Stadium. Highlights include the 15-minute Animals cover "Inside Looking Out", taking up the whole C-side, a blistering cover of The Stones' "Gimme Shelter" and the Grand Funk classic "Footstompin' Music".

Produced by Terry Knight, Closer to Home is Grand Funk Railroad's third studio album, released in 1970. The album reached Gold record status the same year, making it the group's third Gold record in one year. The album's inside artwork shows a live photo of the band performing at Madison Square Garden in February 1970.

Closer to Home was the record that really broke them through to the commercially successful level of Metal masters such as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Rather than rushing headlong into their typical hard, heavy, and overamplified approach, Grand Funk Railroad began expanding their production values.

Most evident is the inclusion of strings, the acoustic opening on the disc's leadoff cut, "Sins a Good Man's Brother," as well as the comparatively mellow "Mean Mistreater." But the boys had far from gone soft. The majority of Closer To Home is filled with the same straight-ahead rock & roll that had composed their previous efforts.
