Label/Format: Charisma – early large pink Hatter format with the correct B&C credits, they have a matt, smooth finish. Later copies had the small Hatter labels.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive, barely a spindle trace to be seen on side one. Side two has less than moderate ones that are very fine and faint.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 141 grams. A very good solid weight for this one, later pressings were much thinner.

Rarity: Moderate for a progressive album. The hit single ‘I Know What I Like’ helped promote sales and this remains one of the band’s most popular albums.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a very clean example of this record, but it does have a small flaw with a one groove jump midway through ‘More Fool Me’. This the short final song on side one, the milli-second skip sound like a click and is NOT on a vocal part, so is less critical for that. As the rest of the record plays really well with clean, clear sound – this never to be taken for granted on this or any other Charisma record from this time – I have no qualms in offering it. A super-fine mark that was not even easy to see the culprit, but this is why I play-grade all my records to note such issues. I use a fairly heavy coil cartridge, it is possible a lower-mass magnet stylus may track this tiny fine mark that follows the grooves, but is purely opinion. I only own the one turntable so I cannot compared. SO BE AWARE of this, and clearly not for the highly discerning. As there is little else to fault, many collectors I am sure will still enjoy this classic album.

Brief Info: One of the best-loved Genesis albums and my personal favourite for the ‘Gabriel’ era. It even includes a hit single with ‘I Know What I Like’. More epic prog-rock with wonderful complex arrangements and immaculate production and musicianship – this album has it all. Never an easy album to find with decent cover and record, the pressing quality – a known fact – always variable, often very noisy with surface sound and substantial crackle. This one plays very well with little unwanted apart from the one mill-second skip as clearly mentioned above. That one small flaw apart, a very enjoyable listen and few will better significantly I feel sure.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: arguably worthy of the (+). A single format with no laminate protection and matt, smooth surfaces. Rarely seen devoid of grubbiness, sticker issues and creasing, often faded too. This the original cover that was printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group and including the original B&C credits and including the intense green-black lyric insert sheet. Only slightly later issue covers were made by Garrod & Lofthouse.

Cover Front: A pale front and avoiding some traces of handling or grubbiness is difficult. This has only very mild traces around the edges but the main graphic is superb. A couple of small tip creases and minor faint tone spot, the lack of rubbing, major creasing and ring wear are significant pluses and this front will not prove easy to find better.

Cover Back: The back is pretty much the same and this being even harder to find nice with a large area of one colour – pale yellow, as most will know, being the most revealing colour of all.

Top Edge: Straight with little wear at all.

Bottom Edge: Same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any wear or thickening, guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, but made quite thin. All text is perfect and unworn, text centuring a little low, the surface clean and fresh, possibly a little faded.

Corners: Tiny tip rubs on the right pair, a couple of tip creases which are fairly minor. Very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round first issue ‘Day’ example, with far fewer issues than most seen, this rarely escapes grubbiness, this should please many collectors. The plain white unlined inner sleeve is included near excellent condition. Little wear or creasing, a little set-off from the dark insert with all edges unsplit with no repairs. This includes the ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text.

The Lyric Insert Sheet: EXCELLENT(+): this is printed on thick paper and has the very dark green-black shade. Printed both sides with no creasing of note and any handling traces tiny and faint.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: this NOT taking into account of the tiny fine groove mark that gives one groove skip as mentioned twice above. A very fine visual copy that is clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. Very fine surface marks are seen with scrutiny under bright angled light. These purely superficial and few early examples will not have them as a minimum. A nice copy that will please many collectors, but the tiny tracking flaw means not for the more discerning collector this time.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fantastic album plays mostly above it’s high visual grading with little to fault bar the one groove skip now mentioned for the fourth time. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, and overall, a very fine clean pressing for a demanding album that has more than it’s fair share of quiet passages. The odd sporadic click or surface sound trace are nigh-on unavoidable on this album, and bear in mind, Charisma pressing quality was not always the most reliable (especially at this time). Even with the one tiny tracking blemish, few copies will outperform this still impressive example for sound I feel sure. Little else of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – I love this album and really it deserves it’s classic prog status. This early-pressed copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and merits high recommendation, but again, not for the more discerning with the jump near the end of side one.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
