David Bowie ?– The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars RCA Victor, 1972. SF 8287 (LSP 4702)
For sale a rare Early pressing from 1972 of The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars.
The best bit is the condition of the record itself, its VG++ hardly any slight surface marks to be seen even under a bright light, it's still very shiny and even has a bit of static, always a good sign!
This record right here is music history and if you're a serious collector an early UK pressing like this one is an essential addition to your collection, many serious collectors have all editions from the first press through to the last and even the interim copies.
Early Press Identifiers
Bright orange label, the later ones were red, then black.
No mention of stereo at all apart from the generic blurb the record label printed as standard in small print on the back of the sleeve as they transitioned from mono recordings to stereo during the early to mid 70's.
Inner sleeve: original inner sleeve with song lyrics printed on one side, and on the other side pictures of David Bowie, Trevor Bolder, Mick Woodmansey and Mick Ronson with the lyrics to the bonus track "Rock n Roll Suicide"
Some have identified this as it's an interim pressing between 1st and 2nd with the Mainmain logo on the back of the sleeve, but no mention of Mainman publishing credits on the label. After the company was formed, the MainMan credit replaced the publishing credits assigned to Titanic.
On the back on the sleeve it has the words "TO BE PLAYED AT MAXIMUM VOLUME"
Matrix Number Identifiers
These have been etched by hand into the runout:
Side 1: BGBS 0864, A-95, SF8287, A2U Side 2: BGBS 0865 - 5E, YV, SF8287, A2AB
Condition
Sleeve: (Good +) as you can see from the photo's there is a fair bit of wear and some slight fading around the edges, light creasing and some slight ring wear at the top and bottom. At the opening there is a very small tear near the bottom.
Spine: Is fairly worn with faded print.
Inner Sleeve: creases near the top corners, nothing unusual for an inner sleeve that must have been pulled in and out god knows how many times over the past 44 years.
Record: Very Good ++ EX. I graded this under a bright light and could hardly even see any light surface marks which is really good, even a record with plenty of surface marks that can be seen under a bright light still plays OK, so this one is quite exceptional in my opinion. Side B has a slight nic at the start of track 2, but its probably more visible than anything, but always expect a bit of background snap crackle and pop with a record of this age that has been played.
Label: In great condition, still retains its bright orange colour, the print is still sharp and the spindle is in good condition too.
All of the above are my own gradings and opinions, this is my best explanation of the condition of this record and sleeve, and my grading could vary slightly from someones elses, so please do take a good look at the photo's but I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
