Deep Purple : In Rock A2 / B1
This first pressing plays to a very high standard with not one click or pop! The power and depth of the audio is stunning and the only 'background' is a very minimal amount of light distortion in a couple of sections. It is nothing to worry about! It really does play exceptionally well.
As this is a genuine first press there is no EMI logo on the labels. There is an A1/B1 matrix although to this day I have never seen one, they were changed before the release date. Discogs says that 1 in 20 first pressings have this matrix although I beg to differ! I have seen a lot and not found one yet!
The gatefold is in great condition with only minimal wear on the corners, it is very clean. The original has a little wear here and there but nothing major.

Visual grading
The vinyl is in great condition and still has a strong glossy sheen. S1 in particular is stunning with no obvious hairlines and S2 has just one longer hairline which is only very faint and has no bearing on the superb audio. There are also 4/5 very small hairlines that again have no affect. It is still a very clean side for 50 years old. There is some spindle wear but the run out grooves and labels are in great order with no marking.
Play grading
The 'high octane' intro on 'Speed King' plays with stunning power and depth and no interference, what a start! In the quieter section that follows there is only minimal static and a small number of light ticks and once Gillan's vocal comes the audio cannot be underestimated. The audio is so deep and strong and there is no distortion on the top end. Lord's instrumental section then plays with great clarity, just a couple of light ticks. From then on it plays extremely well with no 'background' of any kind apart from a couple of barely audible ticks right at the end. There is one click in the dead wax prior to the next track. Overall an Ex+ start to this classic album.
'Blood Sucker' is superb from the opening note and again plays with that familiar deep rich Purple tone. The vocal section is flawless and the long instrumental more than keeps up this 'high end' standard with sublime quality. This is such a strong version and Mint- is rightfully deserved.
The quiet intro on 'Child In Time' is very clean with barely any static. There is a very gentle hiss in the background but that is common and does not intrude on the music at all. There are no clicks or pops and the first vocal is very impressive with barely any 'background'. As the music builds there is a little distortion on the top end but it still plays very well and Blackmore's solo is then stunning - the power and depth is exceptional! You can turn it up to max with no fear of distortion here! The next quieter section plays beautifully with only minimal (very minimal) distortion on the vocal here and there. As it builds again there is a little more distortion but you can still play it loud! The final section is very strong with barely any 'background', a great finish to this classic. I will grade as Ex+ overall but it has to be said many sections are Near Mint for sure. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 'Flight Of The Rat' plays with real power and impressive clarity on the intro and the first vocal section is so clean and precise with no sign of any interference. It progresses in the same way and Lord's long instrumental is another example of a vinyl so well preserved down the years. There is no 'background' and each note plays so precisely. This stunning audio continues into the next section and this has to be one of the finest versions of this track that I have ever heard. The sound is so clear and the final verses play with the same quality also as does the percussive end section. I have no hesitation in saying this is Mint- it is that good.
The intro on 'Into The Fire' has no interference and the first verse is equally as good. It continues to play with very strong and deep audio and again there is no interference to report. It may not quite have the clarity of the first track (more to do with how it was recorded/produced) but it still plays extremely well with no clicks or pops and no underlying static either. Near Mint is still deserved.
The percussive intro on 'Living Wreck' is faultless and it continues to play very clearly with no interference. There is perhaps just a minor hint of static but in all honesty it is barely noticeable. The audio is still very clean and again there are no click or pops. One thing I always notice is how powerful the drums are on this track. Near Mint-
The intro on 'Hard Lovin' Man' plays superbly with such powerful audio and the first vocal can hardly be faulted either. From then on there is much to admire - there is no distortion on the top end and Lord's rip-roaring solo that bursts in is a case in point - it is stunning! Don't forget this vinyl is over 50 years old now and the clarity and power is very impressive indeed. Blackmore's work is sublime also and this entire instrumental section is just fantastic! Wonderful power and depth throughout and the final vocal is also close to perfection. There is a little static on Blackmore's end section which I would grade as Ex but the rest is Near Mint in my opinion.
In summary this genuine first press plays to a wonderful standard with no obvious interference. There is barely any static, only very minimal distortion and not one single click or pop. Not bad for a 50+ year old record! The record is very clean and has been so well preserved down the decades and not overplayed. A fine example that any collector would be very impressed by.
The Gatefold
The laminated G & L gatefold is in excellent condition with only very minimal shelf wear. The edges are in superb order and the spine remains fully legible with only 3/4 minor crease lines and the usual 'line' running down the centre caused by the opening of the cover. The corners have only a little rubbing/wear and the opening edge is pristine with no handling wear at all. The front cover is super clean with no marking, just a handful of small creases around the edges, and the back cover is just as good. It does have a couple of minor laminate creases and also a small crease top left. The inside is in lovely condition with none of the staining/spotting that you so often see and for once the inner spine is undamaged. A fine example overall.
The Inner Sleeve
The original poly-lined EMI/Harvest inner has no side splits but does have a couple of minor tears on the top edge, a little age related fading around the edges, minor creasing and two tracks written in pen on one side.
The Labels
The yellow/green labels (no EMI logo) are very clean with no marking or writing - just some spindle wear but not an excessive amount.
