Label/Format: Atlantic – original red and maroon (‘plum’) format with matt surfaces and a very gentle hint of texturing.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any of the very few spindle marks being fine and faint. A lovely late ‘Plum’ copy with impressive looks and sound.

Rarity: Moderately scarce, especially with a lesser-played first issue label and nicer cover. A delicate album that needs to be handled and played carefully, the same for the beautifully designed cover. The cover especially is often seen in very worn and tatty condition.

Brief Info: The term ‘beautiful album’ was never more appropriate than for this timeless masterpiece. After the success of Crosby, Stills & Nash, Neil Young joined the trio and instantly became a superstar, the quartet equally so, if only for only a brief time. Déjà Vu sold well, making the top spot in the US and a very healthy No 5 in the UK. All four members excel with their own self-written titles, my personal favourites are Young’s delicately sensitive ‘Helpless’, Nash’s beautiful ‘Teach Your Children’ and Crosby’s post-hippy anti-establishment tour de force ‘Almost Cut My Hair’, probably the most powerful song he ever wrote. The album is awash with stunning harmonies and sublime songs and no album collection should ever be without a copy. Very difficult to find clean examples however, the cover especially is so prone to wear, which is a shame for such a lavish design. This is certainly one of the better ones I have seen for some time, this one of the last pressed prior to the full new Kinney label taking over. Indeed, this copy has the Kinney K 5001 sticker inside the gatefold making it one of the final ones pressed on the original label. Wisely, the sticker was placed inside on the smooth card rather than the textured exterior where it probably would have caused major damaged if removal had been attempted. A little wear, but so few will be found without some these days. The record appears little played and offers lovely sound with very little unwanted. So for those seeking a clean ‘Plum’ example, a very fine example all-round.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: it could be strongly argued better still for one of the most intolerant and unforgiving covers of its time. An unlaminated gatefold with matt finish. The front and back are beautifully, and heavily textured, the inside is smooth. Gold leaf is applied to the front and spine, this lightly embossed. The front picture panel is a paste-on sheet, again delicate. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. As stated and seen, the inside bottom right includes the scarce ‘transition’ Kinney K 5001 sticker. The Polydor-style inner sleeve is date-coded 1271 (December 1971), so this is very late for this label.

Cover Front: A little gentle rubbing the very extreme edges and corner tips, but very little to the main area as seen. A fine crease near the top right corner and on a couple of tips. The shaped paste-on style picture is superb with barely anything to fault – seen in close-up. All the gold text matter is pristine. Such dark textured surfaces seldom avoid heavy wear, and this front can be considered significantly above average.

Cover Back: This impossibly difficult large brown area is again in very fine condition, with so many seen heavily ringworn and/or badly rubbed, this can only be described as amazing in terms of the lack of. Corner tip rubs with minimal visible edge rubbing, few will show much less ink loss. The main issue is a moderate crease towards the top right corner.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault at all, the quite rare Kinney 5001 sticker close as-made with only very gentle crinkle.

Top Edges: Both straight, flush and flat, but with moderate patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Practically the same.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both still reasonably sharp with any thickening or burring little and light as seen viewed end-on. Both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced, the record enters on the back.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, there is some tilt to right. Folded impressively square as well, all the edges are flush and parallel (with allowance to the tilt to right). A very fine natural centre line has formed, but the fragile fine gold text is unworn and very neat. Some rubbing to the ends, but the main surface, including the folds show hardly any wear.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing with a couple of light creases. Fine to very fine shape largely retained.

Cover Summary: One of the greatest covers ever, lavishly made, but unforgiving for wear, and so difficult to find better preserved examples. This not perfect, but with most wear on the top and bottom edges, and the main areas still impressive, it will please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the Polydor-style inner has aged well. Minimal creasing or ageing, all edges unsplit with no repairs. Two crisp window circles, the polylining clear and fresh. Date-coded 1271 (December 1971) making this copy one of the last on the ‘Plum’ labels.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: and arguably better as in normal room light, this looks superb. With more scrutiny under bright light, most ultra fine, wispy surface marks are seen. No doubt whatsoever, from dry-cloth cleaning, totally harmless super-fine hairlines, there are no penetrating stylus scratches at all. A very impressive visual copy that is very clean with lovely sine and very solidly pressed. With mostly very impressive audio quality, this record should please many collectors, but not the perfectionists who want ‘pristine’ at any cost.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This final ‘Plum’ pressing plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very impressive with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. From the immensely quiet and gorgeous guitar strums from the left channel right at the very start, you will know you have something extra special here. Any surface sound minimal and faint, minor traces between a couple of songs on side two, but very little on the music areas, this also quite a quiet album in places. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played only lightly and has been reasonably well stored and the record itself, carefully handled. The vocal harmonies are crystal clear and sharp, precise and fully focused with no tracking issues*. Not all copies will ever guarantee that, invisible pressing noises on utmost clean copies can be encountered, but this has avoided any. Vocals and backing have an in-the-room quality and play-grading was a pleasure in virtually all it’s entirety. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record and my LP12 reveals all – good and bad – but nothing bad on this gem. This record will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended – and the cover’s not half bad either – a very fine all-round example of an evergreen classic.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
