Caravan's first two albums, their self-titled debut from 1968 and 1970's If I Could Do It All Over Again I'd Do It All Over You, were popular among fans of progressive rock's Canterbury sound, but when the band released In the Land of Grey and Pink a year later, they widened their audience to an even greater extent. With members Pye Hastings, Richard Sinclair, David Sinclair, and Rich Coughlan once playing with Robert Wyatt and Kevin Ayers in the Wilde Flowers, they had decided to further their musical skills even though both Wyatt and Ayers left to form Soft Machine in the mid-'60s.

Caravan's first two recordings instilled the Canterbury sound with a little bit of avant garde-ism thrown into the mix, but with In the Land of Grey and Pink they had achieved a light, classically flavored feel that brought their true talents to the surface, and this is exemplified best in the title track. Throughout the song, Dave Sinclar's Mellotron work invokes a wonderfully light and fragile environment, delicately lining the breezy melody. Hastings' vocals appear almost translucent, and they manage to produce a dream-like atmosphere without losing touch with the rest of the instruments, while the track's extremely English sound is built around the folk-laden strings and soft piano that emerge in the middle of the song. There's even an attractive hippie-like ease that evolves around the melody, helping to establish "In the Land of Grey and Pink"'s mystical flavor.

It wasn't long after the release of In the Land of Grey and Pink that David Sinclair left the band to join Robert Wyatt in Matching Mole, and later he reunited with his cousin once again in Hatfield and the North. Caravan was held together by Hastings and Coughlan throughout the rest of the 1970s, but the title track from their third album still remains their most acclaimed piece.
