Description
Rare, fine old 1963 Philips pre-Plum stereo recording in a box set of 2 records 835 182/3 AY Svatoslav Richter on piano Mstislav Rostropovich on cello. The vinyl needs a good dusting/cleaning and here are the main flaws: 182 side 1 scuffing at 11 o'clock and possible scratch at 5 o'clock 4 cm long and 6 o'clock 3 cm 182 side 2 minor mark near run off area 1 mm 183 side 1 small mark at 9 o'clock near start of record and hairline scratch 6 o'clock going diagonally up 6 cm long detectable under strong light and 11 o'clock hairline detectable under strong light and tilting the record at a specific angle 3 and 1/2 cm 183 side 2 small scratch at 3-30 5 mm at start but what looks like a hairline scratch at about 4 o'clock going the length of the record. I detected this under a strong light and tilting the record at a specific angle. There is some blotching and a few marks here and there but overall it looks good given its age. The insert is a booklet in English, French and German on the subject of Beethoven and the two players. Pictures of the two are also inside the booklet. Outer box is sturdy if a little bumped and grazed in places but again looks good for its age. Reluctantly I will give the vinyl just a VG due to the problems with side 2 of 835 183 (It might get a better grading with a good cleaning) and the box as Ex. I still think it's an okay recording despite the flaws. I have now listened to side 2 of 835 183 and despite a few crackles it sounds nice and plays all the way through. I think it would sound even better after a good clean. I think that because the scratch is so fine that it hardly impinges on the sound quality. I will leave the grading at VG
