Blue Oyster Cult

'Secret Treaties'

CBS, UK, 1974

8013

ARGUABLY THE greatest North American hard rock band of all time. This album is a minor masterpiece - everything about it is just perfect from the sinister cover featuring the band lined up outside of a Messerschmidt to the music inside. Contains some of the bands greatest songs such as 'Career Of Evil', 'Dominance And Submission', Harvester Of Eyes', 'Astronomy' and the brilliant 'ME262'. All these tracks are wonderfully representative of what makes the BOC so great - intelligent lyrics that often touch on the paranormal and musical arrangements that although harbour serious prog rock leanings never actually take full plunge. Their riffs are understated yet marvelously adroit and completely original - these guys never once stole a lick or a promise from Sabbath, Zeppelin or Deep Purple.

'Career Of Evil' is a monster track embracing all that is right about the BOC ethos whilst 'ME262' plunders the garage rock crown of such period luminaries as the MC5 or the Stooges but, natch, without any of the cheesy pilfering that might have sunk the ship. 'Harvester Of Eyes' sports a Teutonic stuttered riff of significant form - one could imagine it to have been a secret German noise weapon developed at the tail end of the second world war zapping the enemy with intense, mind altering decibels. 'Astronomy' is my favourite BOC ballad - a track awash with all the strangeness that one might reasonably expect from such an obtuse cabal. It's a simply triumphant composition that sits up there with 'Stairway To Heaven' and 'Child In Time' as one of the most accomplished songs of all time.

Tough to score original red/orange label 1st presses and when you do find them they are normally trashed. This one is in great shape!

This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
