Just months before he would pass away in 1958, Big Bill Broonzy sat in at a recording session for Columbia records and recorded this great contribution for the blues posterity. By this time, Big Bill's stature as the founding father of  modern urban blues had been so firmly established that Columbia (almost certainly at the insistence of John Hammond, Sr.) felt obligated to give Big Bill a "star" treatment and record his swan song on their audiophile "Adventures in Sound" gold label subsidiary. As a result, of many Big Bill Broonzy's albums, this one sounds by far the best and is the single most listenable one. The album has been unavailable for decades in any way, manner or form. In addition to being one of the finest - and rarest - blues albums ever, it sports one of the most desolate, bluesy cover artworks of all time - evocative of the wee small hours of desperation and being left alone with the bottle of schnapps . I guess you can call it `no-money-no-wimmin-no-booze-blues`.  This is one of those albums where COVER sings to you as much as the artist does. A Must for any self-respecting blues collector.

·       THE RECORD:

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-        Cover has minor writing on its back side   (less than 1 square inch in size)

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-         Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  / bent.

-         Front cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker (less than 1/8 square inch in size)
