The explosion of the UK blues bands in the mid to late 60's produced some extraordinary talent, Savoy brown were up there with the very finest of them all. the only unusual thing was not having the customary John Mayall connection for the musicians. they did however have the benefit of Mayall's record producer Mike Vernon. Be it Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, Ten years After ect., most of the 60's true great blues albums have mike vernon's name down as the credit for producer. Savoy Brown formed in 1966 and became part of the UK blues club circuit. It was the famous Klooks Kleek, Savoy Brown was playing on the same bill as John Mayall (his name always figures in somewhere!) That is where Vernon first saw there incredible talent, leading to sign up with Decca. There lineup for there debut album "Shakedown"; Kim simmonds (guitar), Martin Stone (guitar), Bruce Portius (vocals), Leo Mannings (drums), Ray Chapple (bass guitar), and with bob Hall playing piano on three of the tracks. They recorded a stunning album but the UK record buyers did'nt respond, "Shakedown" was a commercial disaster, totally failing to sell, not even making a chart entry. As usual a 37 year old record that did'nt sell is a mega rare record today, in fact the UK became a place Savoy Brown never made any inroads, but the states took to there superb music, recognizing there ability live as well as in the studio. Throughout the rest of there careers, Savoy Brown underwent a succession of musician changes, Only Kim Simmonds remained as a constant member. There music evolved from pure blues into a kind of boogie rock, I'm not keen on putting labels on music, but thats the only way I know how to describe there 70's music. Shakedown was issued in the UK in both stereo and mono, Any LP from 1967 is very rare in stereo, but for LP's that fail to sell, we're talking scarce. This was an out and out blues album. The album is notorious for being in poor condition as a 1967 original.
This is in outstanding condition. the labels are in superb condition, record is vg++. The cover overall in excellent,condition with some light wear. The front has undulled, highly glossy laminate, over unfaded deeply rich color. the mega heavyweight record has left the expected impression, but it is only mild, with a few small related laminate wrinkles. but not anything to detract from the beautifull looking front cover. I'm rightly being harsh on an extremely rare 37 year old cover, all four corners are square shapped with just the lightest wear, including both of the opening sides, all the edges are in excellent condition, as is the spine and the title's printing, the back panel is also in very good condition for the background to the text and band pictures.
