SOME COLLECTED THOUGHTS ON THE LP SPACE HYMNS by Ramases (New Groove’s Fireside Rantings)

A really great British psych/prog album here that I gotta admit, I was getting way into while play testing. Like the cover, it’s ethereal and cosmic and takes you on a journey.

Personally, I’ve left my heady “wake and bake and repeat” days in the past (yeah, that sounds believable) but I was just play-grading this on the 20th of April and let’s just say that me and my friend “Mary Jane” and her friend “Legal Recreational Cannabis Purchased from A Licensed State Tax-Paying Dispensary” had a blast following the trajectory of this trip

You got your typical heavier guitar riffs alongside some noise & tape echo “explorations” for the early Crimson or Soft Machine fans who like their prog to hit hard and heavy but that is balanced by a nice mid 70s “Londoner escaping to the countryside” pop sensibility - a pop sensibility that the LPs from many of Ramases’ fellow Roger Dean-adorned prog peers could learn a thing or two from; these songs don’t make me going running for the hills like a Yes double LP does.

  • Quick “Art Chat” sidebar -

On the topic of the Roger Dean artwork and album cover, I think this might be my favorite of his work and the fold-out gatefold cover really does justice to the ominous art.

Looking outside of this cover, my least favorite Roger Dean art is that, I think, Babe Ruth LP with the cosmonaut pinch hitter on the front. It’s also somehow my most favorite. I don’t know how I can justify that but it’s an absolutely insane album cover and the perfect balance of dumb and clever. Maybe leans a little more on the dumb side.

- Sidebar over. Come back next week for another “Art Chat” -

And back to the regular programming…

But what really made the album memorable on my listen was the almost “freak folk” elements that recall influential and cult classic-status acts like Pearls Before Swine or Vashti Bunyan to more current acts like Animal collective or Big Thief.

I think you could potentially draw a straight line of influence from Ramases LP to aughts post-psych group Animal Collective and their 2004 album “Sung Tongs” which I’m pretty confident was partially inspired or influenced by this record hear for sale.

The influence is pretty apparent when comparing the song “Kids On Holiday” from the mentioned Animal Collective album to the song “Quasar One” from this album with their shared droning one chord jangle thru the verses to the nasally, slightly childish and chant-like vocals.

New Groove Info Update - I have been more or less able to verify that at least some members of Animal Collective are fans of the album. I was able to locate it (the above-mentioned song “Quasar One”) in a setlist from a 2017 online radio show by AC member Geologist.

The dude is no slouch when it comes to heavy psych/acid rock (especially for a Dead Head) and the whole mix is a really good listen. Def worth checking out. I don’t think I can post a direct link but it is the 03/05/2017 airing of his GEOLOGIST PRESENTS: THE O'BRIEN SYSTEM radio show.

Also, to answer your question, yes, I know nobody is wasting their time reading all of this and, yes, I know I’m boring and my takes are bad. But I got nothing better going on, ok? Ever since the local public access call-in show blocked my number, I’ve had no one to talk to. There I said it, happy now? If you are happy, then go buy some records from me. NEW GROOVE OUT

Grading, Shipping and Returns

I try to grade conservatively and I adapt this conservative approach to Goldmine Standards but I do use EX and VG- when needed because I feel Goldmine grading is not descriptive enough compared to any other grading system and not always descriptive enough.  NM basically looks and sounds like a mint album while EX would look like a mint or near mint album with maybe one superficial mark or light scuff/hairline or the briefest lightest spot of surface noise or one or two light pops thru both sides.  I also try to provide well-recorded audio samples of the exact item for sale.  You can hear the grade before buying but I promise you won't be disappointed.

When shipping, I use new professional LP or 45 mailers along with sturdy inserts.  Every item will come in a clear plastic outer sleeve, the media will be removed from the sleeve and any included inner sleeve and placed into a new white inner sleeve to prevent seam splits.

I accept returns up to 30 days and will pay for return shipping on domestic orders with legitimate return claims. f you have any questions or concerns, message me and I will respond promptly.
