Label/Format: Reprise – original tri-coloured format. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both immaculate and could almost pass for new. Ultra clean, super fresh and highly attractive and struggling to find a single spindle trace at all. Another from the superb small batch I recently bought where the one-and-only-owner played them little and with the utmost care.

Original Year of Release: 1970.

Rarity: The original first pressing on the tri-coloured Reprise label is quite rare. It proved to be the final Zappa album issued on this label and was quite a late one on this format, hence the pressing weight is a little below average for this label. ‘Chunga’s Revenge’ and ‘Weasel’s Ripped My Flesh’ albums both appeared in 1970 with RSLP prefixes, but they went immediately to the new tan format design. Now this copy, by rights should not really exist: this tri-coloured example carries both the original matrixes as well as the new Kinney ones (as seen below). And even the plain white inner sleeve has the new Kinney 44083 number written on it by the retailer. Now it is not too unusual for first issue albums on new formats to include both the previous matrix details as well as the new ones, but it’s far more unusual for the original labels to include the correct RSLP matrixes along with the K- prefix Kinney new ones. This copy proves it was one of the very final albums to appear or be made on the tri-colour label and proves how late this album was on this label at all. I really believe this to be a rare and unusual copy (and probably the best example I have yet seen or heard).

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High Indeed: within Zappa’s vast catalogue, this has to be one of the most wear-prone covers. They rarely, if ever escapes often significant ringwear. This one has the least I have ever seen (even including my own personal copy), hence, I put the back for my first picture on Ebay – this one that is so often not shown at all. Finding this back with no ringwear is near impossible. But this owner really knew how to store records and simply look how magnificent this one is – little short of reference standard – actually debating if this is better than my own.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Some of Zappa’s finest instrumentals are ‘Sandwiched’ inbetween two slices of doo-wop trivia: ‘WPLJ’ (wine, port and lemon juice, and ‘Valerie’. ‘Igor’s Boogie’ was written for Stravinsky, while ‘Holiday in Berlin’ was for the militant German students who had invaded the stage in October 1968, demanding that Zappa make an anti-capitalist statement (Zappa later said their leaders wanted him to tell the audience to burn down a nearby American forces base). ‘Aybe Sea’ was a tinkling piano piece that again relied on Ian Underwood’s sensitive touch. The centrepiece of this wonderful album is ‘The Little House I Used to Live In’, which occupies most of side two. It’s similar in structure to the Hot Rats album, with blistering solos from Sugarcane Harris’s electric violin - an awesome electric storm - and the finale is an organ solo frenzy by Frank himself. After ‘Little House’ a short dialogue between Zappa and a member of the audience, this always intrigues me as you cannot really hear clearly what the heckler is saying, but Frank’s lines are: “Everyone here is wearing a uniform, don’t kid yourself’’ and “You will hurt your throat, stop it’’ - he shuts up. This is a near supreme all-round copy, and includes those unusual matrixes. It also does vary slightly from the CD version. The record plays beautifully with all the clarity, focus and lack of noise of a new record. Yes, even that delicate piano solo intro that opens side two is practically crackle-free, and few ever are. The cover is beyond impressive and one of the very few I have ever seen devoid of ugly ringwear. A copy Zappa fans will cherish, the more discerning collectors, please apply.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): an unlaminated, gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd and has the original ‘Patents Pending’ text.

Cover Front: A breathtaking front that on it’s own, I would have no hesitation in grading full Mint. Very colourful and bizarrely strange, this retains rich colour with no fading, marks, creases or grubbiness. Even under light, this looks just-off-the-press stunning and is of connoisseur standard.

Cover Back: Ringwear?: WHAT RINGWEAR? – this impossibly wear-prone side looks almost equally impressive with little to fault. This tasty little sucker is little short of the front with any marks tiny, few and very faint. Rarely found like this and if you got it – flaunt it!

Cover Inner Gatefold: Beautiful condition again and totally devoid of any wear or ageing.

Top Edges: Any rub traces are also tiny, very few and faint.

Bottom Edges: Mainly light, patchy rubbing on the front edge, a little more towards the corners.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Any rubbing very light indeed, few of these storage edges will ever show less on this unforgiving cover.

Spine and Text: Absolutely STUNNING again: a wide, thick spine that looks totally unworn or aged. Ultra solid and straight, totally erect, uncompressed or tilted. All text is pristine perfect and unworn and even the white surface has avoided any grubbiness. Please see my close-up picture of this large and immaculate text.

Corners: Tip rubbing is only modestly light and only present on the right ones, the spine tops are pristine. Very fine to excellent shape is retained, the spine pair little short of Mint.

Cover Summary: A hugely impressive all-round example of this very wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that will prove near impossible to find better. This incredibly well-preserved item should please most-all collectors. Note: the UK versions of this album never included any insert.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): Reitterating how late this RSLP original label album was pressed, the plain white, unlined inner has the K 44083 number written on the top right corner area. This is guaranteed to be the original inner that came with the set, the owner kept all his inners even if he put the records in lined replacements to safer storage. The only sign of age is a little darkening of the adhesive on the seams and a trace from the record’s rim – all quite faint. This has barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): a super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, jet black and solidly pressed. A very late pressed RSLP, I am certain very few of these variants will even exist. A record clearly played little played, probably just twice after my sound check. Any surface blemishes are few, tiny and ultra faint. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This stunning record plays beautifully and matches, or being honest, even exceeds my own personal copy. A record that has some very quiet passages, but a fantastic clean pressing and even these critical areas are nigh-on perfect. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted. Even that fragile solo piano that opens side two is clean and devoid of the usual crackle and clicks that spoils so many. This has massive highs and lows in frequency range: from the lower bass notes of the organ finale to Harris’s high frequency electric violin, always a very difficult instrument to track and maintain. This plays with no clipping or echo at all, all is very sharp and focused throughout. Same goes for the piano parts, these again are very crisp. This album is predominately instrumental and only lightly played, early pressed copies usually make the grade required for top sound. Few copies will even match, let alone outperform this still early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I know for a fact, this record has hardly been played very lightly and has been incredibly well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, I have all too rarely heard the gentle piano intro on side two play this quiet, this is very difficult indeed. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation, this is a very special example – discerning collectors, please apply.

End Piece: My regular buyers will already know my love of Zappa’s music and this is up there with the best. I only offer strong copies of his albums, ‘Mother People’ only deserve the best and this is certainly another outstanding copy and potentially a rare variant pressing. A notoriously difficult title to find clean – that’s both cover and record – this is exceptional in all departments and sets the bar very high – the cover is worthy of another look.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
