Label Conditions: Two super examples that are very clean, fresh and attractive. Spindle marks are light, fine and faint and only show under angled light.

Cat Number: 2400101.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. An impressive weight for this one.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarcer as a very early pressing, and they rarely get seen much earlier than this. A popular prog-rock album and those who bought it initially, usually played it heavily. The unprotected cover is well-known for wear and again is seldom seen devoid of it.

Brief Info: The band’s third album and the one that got them really noticed. A highly popular album within the progressive rock genre and it justifiably sold well. Hence finding Plum copies is far from impossible but conditions are always a major factor. Highly gifted musicians and complex music does not tolerate old worn stylus abuse and this includes some very quiet passages. A pre-Rick Wakeman album, the keys were taken by Tony Kaye, who subsequently left before the ‘Fragile’ classic. This one of the earliest pressings I have seen, appears very modestly played and offers quality sound. The cover is very impressive and shows little wear. The inner sleeve which is date coded 0371 (March 1971) also in fine, if slightly aged condition with the usual glue darkening around edges that few Polydor style inner seem to avoid. For those needing a early-pressed and lightly used copy of this prog classic, this could fit the bill nicely.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): this being very critical on an uncompromising wear-prone cover. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt finish and original 2400101 number. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press and marketed by Polydor. Includes original inner March date-coded inner sleeve (seen in close-up), only a month later than the issue monthy of February. Rarely are these seen so fine, most are badly worn and tired looking, often severely rubbed and ringworn, this has little to really fault and looks very attractive.

Cover Front: An exceptional clean front and devoid of the usual wear seen. Clean, fresh, dark and attractive, any surface marks are small, few and light and the same for any creases. Just the odd tiny hairline seen (just) on the edges (but look hard).

Cover Back: The back is similar overall: a light press mark near the bottom edge and a hint of rim impression and minor rub trace near the top. Again, any surface marks are few and faint and the lack of penetrating ringwear on this unforgiving back is unusual and welcome.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both faces are in super condition with very little to fault. Any marks or blemishes small, few and mainly faint.

Top Edges: Practically unworn and straight and there appears no evidence of any tipping in.

Bottom Edges: These traditional storage edges have rubbed a little. Only very lightly in context and I have seldom seen less on this one.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with minimal traces of wear with barely a hint of any thickening or burring – a mildish wave seen on the back more viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: This vulnerable spine is quite impressive: solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square. All edges meet up closely together and parallel, this always makes the cover look so much neater and I deem is important enough to mention. All text is perfect and unworn, few will be seen better.

Corners: Mainly small tip rubs and no tipping-in. Excellent shape is largely retained.

Cover Summary: A very fine all-round example of this very wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: and only marked down for the usual seam adhesive darkening and mild ageing. This being the original March date-coded Polydor style polylined inner. The code is seen in close-up as 0371, the month of issue being February of the same year. Both windows are pristine and very crisp, the lining is solid and ultra clear with barely any creasing which is the same for the entire inner. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: with a fairly small non-sounding scuff on side two. Any other surface marks are very fine and faint as seen under bright angled light. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy that looks very modestly played overall, this on a popular progressive giant of an album now over forty. This record should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes – and what a pleasure it was to do so. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This prog-classic plays even above it’s very high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, qualtiy sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is almost audiophile standard with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A high fidelity recording from a band, even in the early days, who cared about quality with complex music from way above average rock musicians. The incredible detail and clarity has to be heard. Devoid of pops or clicks and any surface sound light, gentle and very infrequent. These progressive albums always have quiet passages so absolute silence is a very tough ask. Few very early examples will better this significantly I feel sure. All the intricate sounds, vocals and instruments fully focused and sharp. Just listen to the acoustic guitar solo ‘The Clap’, every chord change can be heard with precision and clarity. Nothing of any real note spoilt my immense pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. I am realistic enough to know silence is near impossible especially if playing on very sensitive equipment and the odd trace present here and there, but very little overall – this being critical too. Do no underestimate how difficult this one is to find in such lovely all-round condition, one that merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
