Description
“Winds of Change” by Jothan Callins & the Sounds of Togetherness (Triumph Records 006) Recorded January 21, 1975 at National Sound Studios
Soaring, contemplative free jazz/spiritual jazz with Jothan Callins on trumpet & bells, Joseph Bonner on piano & tambourine, Norman Connors on drums & percussion, Cecil McBee (courtesy of Strata-East) on bass and Roland Duval on conga & percussion. Really fantastic, floating and lovely stuff, and to my ear very reminiscent of the Pharoah Sanders material from the same time. Jothan was with Sun Ra & his Arkestra so that's another good point of reference. There are several drum parts which could be sampled as breaks or beats if that's your thing. Gets “out” in places but not super “out.” Has a real devotional, sacred sort of feel on “Sons and Daughters of the Sun.” As you can probably tell, I don't know too much about this sort of jazz, but I really like this.
Should appeal to fans of Pharoah Sanders, Shamek Farrah, Strata-East & Black Jazz labels, Alice Coltrane, Stanley Cowell, Horace Silver, Gary Bartz, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Roy Ayers, Weldon Irvine, Oneness of Juju, Clifford Jordan, and similar free jazz, soul jazz & spiritual jazz combos.
Condition: Cover = EX- (very minor edge wear, some chipping, no seam splits or ringwear, minor yellowing at the very edges from age)/Record = EX (shiny & clean, no spindle marks, plays with out any noticeable surface noise, good quality pressing)
