WRITING ON THE WALL - The Power Of The Picts ORIG Middle Earth LP MDLS 303 (UK, Stereo, 1969)
Happy to present this Scottish outfit’s only original LP on the highly treasured UK Middle Earth label from ‘69. This album always reminds me of a superior Crazy World Of Arthur Brown - heavy guitar punctuated with organ driven funky psych and madman vox. There’s some really excellent stuff on here and it’s not surprising this has long been a sought after late 60’s work. Happy to say that I can bring it to you here in a very pleasing condition, certainly better than the other 2 copies I’ve seen.
The original single format textured Garrod & Lofthouse sleeve has always been a fragile affair and is hard to find in strong condition. Well, this is the best one I’ve come across with very little creasing, a 97% intact and legible spine (see photo), no splits, tears or writing, no appreciable feathering and only light rubs to the rear. There is moderate edge rubbing to the top and bottom edges and some light corner wear/rubs although all 4 corners are still right angle shaped. THERE ARE NO CREASES TO THE FRONT OTHER THAN HALF A DOZEN SMALL ONES FROM THE SPINE OUT. Also only one or two light handling creases on the rear. All in all a highly respectable sleeve and better than most surviving examples I feel. This is graded at a TRUE EX- (Excellent Minus).
The record labels are in fine shape with only a couple of longish spindle trails either side. No writing, fading, stickers, residue, tears or other damage to these most iconic, pale blue Middle Earth designs.
The medium weight vinyl (around 140-150 grams), as indicated by the light spindle on the labels has not seen a huge amount of play. There is no groove wear. Visually, it is very strong except for a easily noticeable hairline type surface mark crossing most of Side 1. THIS HAS ABSOLUTELY NO EFFECT ON THE AUDIO. There’s another very light hairline to this side, and some light cleaning scuffs. Side 2 is virtually spotless and really looks the part. Overall, if it weren’t for the Side 1 mark, this would visually grade a confident EX+, but with that in mind I’m giving it a visual VG+ (Very Good Plus). IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and plays excellently with only the lightest surface only detectable in the one or two quiet parts. There is a hiss right at the end of ‘Virginia Waters’, last track Side 2, but this is when the track has virtually finished. Overall there are NO clicks, loud pops, NO distortion or loss of clarity. A genuine EX (Excellent) play grade. Brilliant!
The legendary ‘Power Of The Picts’. Very heavy. Very 1969. A strong example which would easily fit into a high grade collection. Low start no reserve!
