Brief Artist & Album Info: As the title cunningly suggests, Wishbone Ash’s fourth album, a fine record it is too considering the near impossible task of following their masterwork which was Argus. Again featuring their finest classic line-up, this is more double-guitar-driven rock of the highest quality. A vintage very early pressing which is impressive with a very clean record and little-worn cover (another delicate ringwear-prone item). Included also is that elusive, large tri-fold-out poster (lyrics printed on back). This is very clean, unaged or mounted, and quite possibly the best I have seen to date. Less-lauded than it’s famous predecessor, but a very fine album in it’s own right.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed in England by Robert Stace. Includes original 1973 date-coded inner sleeve and a superb unmounted poster.

Cover Front: Generally clean, still quite fresh and attractive with very few marks. A small edge rub is seen on the top edge and a few, mostly fine creases on the spine edge. The blue colour and artwork impressive and unfaded, the blue prone to wearing badly, but little to fault here.

Cover Back: A little gentle creasing that shows little, that apart not a great deal to fault again. The lack of ring wear on this back is a considerable bonus as this is very prone with heavy first issue records inside for 40 years.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A small chip (or rub) on the top right edge, that apart, little else to really fault.

Top Edges: Both straight with only a tiny rub on the back and just the one more moderate one on the front, the one mentioned on the front view visual.

Bottom Edges: Mainly straight with any rubbing light and patchy.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, reasonably sharp, the front particularly so, with little wear. Any thickening or burr traces mild and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on either edge as both are open - one holds the large poster – both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Mainly solid and again quite straight with any compression modest. A natural central recess crease has formed from opening that, depending on the style of the spine and hinge, naturally forms even from modest usage. A few fine hairline type creases, one of which has crossed the ‘S’ in ‘ASH’, but practically all other text is present and barely worn at all. Any wear to the spine’s surface is very light indeed and, quite unusually, there is barely any wear at all to the folds that retain nigh-on full ink coverage.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is tiny and light, and a little against the odds, very fine to excellent shape is retained (with NO tip-ins evident at all).

Cover Summary: A challenging one to find in anything like top conditions, this one is really nice and does look impressive to the eye with any blemishes small, quite few and light. One that should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A Decca-style polylined inner htat has a very clear lining as seen through two immaculate window circles. The odd corner crease and less than moderate darkening of the seam adhesive. All edges unsplit with no repairs and generally clean with a decent degree of freshness. This is date-code 4-73 (April 1973), so this reitterates this copy is one of the very first pressed and issued, reitterated of course by the -1L/-1L matrixes seen above.

The Poster: MINT(-): and rare as such. This has to be seen to be fully appreciated – just one gentle crease on the top central fold off full Mint. Printed on quite thin matt finished paper, this I guarantee will rarely be found looking better. Totally unmounted with no tape or pin-holes, this is so clean and fresh and unblemished its probably hardly been out of the cover or unfolded. All fold-lines are rock solid and there is no creasing, marks or soiling – even on the white lyrics side – all pristine perfect and nigh-on reference standard, one for the discerning collector.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: with most-all of any surface blemishes being very fine, whispy and faint as seen under bright angled light. Just one a little more obvious, but this again purely surface with no affect on sound at all. There are NO penetrating marks on this record and it sounds terrific. A very fine visual copy with excellent shine and very solidly pressed. Manufactured by Decca for MCA, one of the best quality labels ever and this again failed to disappoint. Few records of this age will avoid minor surface blemishes unless totally unused. Visually a very fine record that should please many collectors again.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality first pressed record plays even above its strong visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a full and rich sound. An album best enjoyed with slightly louder volume to bring out the warmth of the sound detail. Any surface sounds are minimal to none and no pops or clicks were noted, few copies will play a great deal better than this. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this excellent rock album. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended, a very solid ‘all-rounder’ with that fantastic, and elusive poster.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
