Very Rare 7/29/00 CARLO CAFFETTO with Orchestra. Troublesome operatic recordings with the first wax process.

In mid 1900, Eldridge Johnson sold to the Berliner Gramophone Company the rights to use his new wax disc recording process for 15,000 dollars.
Mr Royal was sent over to teach the recording staff how to use the new system. Soon after, the somewhat green recording crew, full of grand ideas of recording singers with orchestras, started in the summer of 1900 to make a series of operatic excerpts. In Milan they hired the singers and a Orchestra.
A major change had taken place with the new system. You could not play it to see how it was recorded without destroying it. The old zinc discs could do that. So in many cases they were recording in the dark with the wax process.
Being that they had little knowledge on how to do this grouping and mixing, the results were mixed and often disastrous.
Some of the records had the singer drowned out by the Orchestra, a few sounded pretty good. But the general view of most was negative. But after these records were made and stampers were made of the new process, in which they were a bit shaky on. Many of the records had a bumpy look like many of the Berliners from 1895-96. Another problem! These were soon dropped.
Soon after nearly all operatic recordings went back to piano, save for a few exceptions. There were some vast improvements made over the next few years on how to mix a small grouping of musicians with a singer. and by 1905-06 it was pretty much the norm.
But this is one of those very rare recordings from those new ideas in 1900. That didn't quite pan out.
This record as you can hear sounds very good for the period. For its age it is quite clean and records from these Orchestra with Operatic singers in 1900 are remarkably scarce . So I would put it at being in very good condition.
When sold, it will be carefully packed and shipped in a new box
