This album of Jamaican Songs is an important milestone in Folk Music in this country. In the past, recording have been made of popular Jamaican Mento songs, which have concentrated on a few well-known tunes.; As a result, most Jamaicans are familiar with such standards as "Linstead Market" and "Mango Walk" while quite unaware of the tremendous number of equally beautiful but less well-known songs, many of which were in danger of disappearing with the older generation.
On the other side of the coin, there had also been recordingf cult music. I myself ( Minister of Finance & Planning ) have done considerable research and have produced two albums of music actually recorded at meetings of various cult groups in the country.These recordings, however,by their very nature, have had a limited appeal as they represent what is of greater interest to serious students of indigenous folk cultures than the puplic at large.
In this album, however, the recordings and selections of which have been made by Olive Lewin, Folk Research Officer at the Jamaican School of Music, the listener is offered a pleasing combination of both the popular mento and the little-known but equally important cult music, some of which has been obtained from private collections such as my own. Miss Lewin has over the course of the past three years been engaged in collecting, transcribing, classiying and cataloguing folk music throughout the island, and the songs in this album are based on the mento, ring-play,nago,work,bruckings,pukkumina,kumina
--- all names which conjure up images of the days of the Traditional in Jamaica. Miss Lewin, in the course of her work has participated in the events around which many of these songs are centred, and she has therefore been prepared to sacrifice some amount of refinement for a degree of authenticity which is
often lacking in many other similar recordings. There are many other songs which will, I hope, follow on other records, but in this album the presentation is centred on a complete cross-section of all areas of Jamaican Folk Music, which in itself makes it worthy of a place in any library of Jamaicana.
