Description
Another one of these titles were 1st pressing is extremely sought after and there just aren't enough decent copies in circulation to stop prices going astronomical. So, what does one do if you want that terrific analogue near master cut to resolve the classic that is 'Astral Weeks'...well read on>>>>>
An original 1971 Warners solid green label copy - a couple of years after 1st release. Matrix A2/B3. No 'Made In UK' on labels which dates the LP to 1971 - and judging by the vinyl weight...I'd say '71 is pretty much bang on the money. The vinyl comes housed in an original cover - front laminated.
Vinyl (Ex/Vg+) In lovely condition and has only seen light careful use. Under close inspection expect a couple of light marks per side, and a couple of superficial trails - nothing remotely troublesome. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly Excellent level of playback with a couple of deviations per side. Quite apart from the fact that the original '68 copies are hellishly difficult to source at all - the next problem you have with AS is...it is a freakin super fussy record. Only copies which were early, and heavy pressed, and have been looked after MIGHT have a chance of delivering a great rendition. If you can't tick these boxes...sorry you're going to be sorely disappointed. But there are copies out there which can tick these boxes. And I'm pleased to report....this is one such example. Good enough to give you clean feed - clean enough to give VAN a chance of showing what he can really do. Is it perfect? No - almost no copy would be. But it is pretty darn good for the majority of the LP. I detected a couple of ticks midway through Astral Weeks. A solitary click in the closing moments of 'Sweet Thing'. The odd static crackle here and there in 'Beside You' & 'Madame George'.....maybe a couple of isolated ticks....these tracks are hellishly fussy. But nothing that detracts....nothing upfront. The ambiance in these tracks is very much still in evidence. And VAN's vocal always comes across loud and clear - rich with texture. That's what these original analogue cuts can do. And what is so often lacking in later reissues that have been through the wringer of the digital domain. Stick to the original. Get near the masters. Find a quality copy - hope that it has been cared for. But if you get lucky and you can tick these boxes...boy it will be worth it...because you will truly hear/witness a classic title like this PROPERLY for the first time. Highly recommended. "Lovers" is just EPIC....on a copy like this you are in rarefied territory... Listen to the bass note plucking on Cyprus Avenue!..sweeet.
Cover (Vg+) Nearly always surfaces looking in torrid condition. It is a pleasant change just holding one that still looks pretty neat. A couple of creases on the front - but the aesthetic is looking very appealing. The rear has largely avoided the ageing process. The occasional blemish here and there - but I'd argue a really good standard. Not much sign of edge wear. Spine 99% intact. Overall the cover retains really dood rigidity.
