This American Recording Society (ARS) LP was released in 1957 at the same time as The Swinging Guitar of Tal Farlow on Verve MGV-8201. ARS was a mail-order subscription jazz label and they leased their material from Norman Granz of Verve Records. The ARS issues came in heavy plastic sleeves without cardboard jackets. Well written, multi-page booklets accompanied the LPs.
On this 1956 session, Farlow led a trio with pianist Eddie Costa and bassist Vinnie Burke. His "new" trio drew unanimous rave reviews from the critics of the day. Nat Hentoff, writing for Down Beat, called this "One of the most gratifying trios to play New York in the past three years. He spoke of "the continually inventive interplay formed of the kind of mutual pleasure in and respect for each other's musicianship that makes for a constant, spontaneous exchange of mid-chorus smiles. Farlow idea-wise is like a swinging waterfall with a rare resourcefulness of fresh conception."
The style of the group--without horns or drums--might be described as "chamber bop," relatively quiet music that swings mightily with complex and mutually supportive interaction, rhythmic verve and fluid invention. Farlow spins out stunning, seemingly effortless, lines of melody, both on bop tunes like Charlie Parker's "Yardbird Suite" and standards such as "Like Someone in Love." His overlapping exchanges with Costa--who possessed a Bud Powell-like fluency--are inspired.
