V.A. “Money Music” (August 100) M-/EX. This rare LP turns up less often than CA Quintet albums in these parts. For those who don’t know, it is a terrific compilation of rare Minnesota singles, released in 1967. In our opinion, there is no better regional garage comp released in the 60s in all of the land. Don’t believe it? Well, The Calico Wall’s “Flight Reaction,” “T.C. Atlantic’s “Faces,” “The Bedlam Four’s “Hydrogen Atom” and the Electras’ “Dirty Old Man” are all highly-sought after singles (plus, the version of “Hydrogen Atom” is a little longer than the impossible-to-come-by 45 on Armada!). Add one of the best versions of “Hey Joe” ever (the Stillroven), a couple C.A. Quintet tracks from their first two singles, and tunes from Twin Cities legends like the Underbeats and the Castaways, among others, and you have an album that is easily the equal of “Long Hot Summer,” “Best of the Hideouts,” or any other 60s-released garage collection you can name. If these turn up, they usually are beat to shite and have significant cover wear. This one has an essentially spotless cover and a record that plays near mint and looks VG++ or better. Whether you’ve been holding out forever for a minty copy or if you are just getting hip to this record, don’t snooze.
