Uriah Heep Bundle 1 of 3 - The Early Byron Years. Even though I no longer have a record player it is actually quite painful to put these up for sale. Salisbury is one of my 10 favourite albums ever and Magicians Birthday is in my top ten songs of all time and my favourite album cover. The first album gets us started and showcases the bands musicianship and songwriting but also their understanding of when to hold back and just let the song breath. Byron's voive is astonishing and Ken Hensley must have rubbed his hands at having that voice to write songs for. Salisbury for me has everything. Three hard rockers, a ballad and a neo folk song on the first side and the Prog tinged Salisbury taking up most of the 2nd side. They really made great use of their harmonies on this album too - something which clearly did not go unnoticed by Sweet and Queen. Brian May has acknowledged that Heep were the model for the harmonies used by Queen. Look at Yourself (with a mirror as a cover) carries on and gives us July Morning and Shadows of Grief as the stand out tracks and then we have Demons and Wizards. Many people's favourite but not mine. Not anything wrong with it at all - it's a great album but Salisbury and Magicians Birthday are my go to Heep. Magicians Birthday comes next with the title track giving one of the great guitar solo's but what a track. The rest is pretty good as well showcasing Byron's range on Sunrise and Rain. Then we have the classic Live 73 album (booklet still attached by the way) Just about perfect. I say just about - the rock n roll medley chaps instead of another of your genius songs - really?
