UNSUNG WONDERS / RICE N PEAS - The Hurting Is Over / The hurting Is Over SONIC WAX SW30.
So on one side we have a soul group, kinda Northern-like, and on the flip we have a reggae group, kinda lovers-like. They are playing the same song and appear to be exactly the same group, horns, melodious female singer and all.
If Northern soul is often a story of thwarted ambition, throwing everything into the pot and who cares if the result is overproduction?, Unsung Wonders take the opposite path: if anything, this is slightly underproduced. The result is a nice floater which sounds like an actual band played it rather than the vision of some manic wannabe Don Davis.
On the flip the vibe is ultra-relaxed and sunny, with horn parts apparently borrowed from the Get In The Groove rhythm, which is OK as Dexys Geno did much the same thing. For me the lovers cut wins, chiefly because rough edges suit this kind of music. But both sides possess a certain soulful style.
