Ursula Creek was formed by Ed Culbertson and Kenny Kastner of San Jose, IL and Gene Singley of Manito, IL in the spring of '74. They played as a power trio with 50% original material and covers from Bloodrock, Kiss, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Chuck Berry, the Beatles, The Stones, Ted Nugent, Thunder Mug, John Entwistle and Cream. Steve Voss of Decatur IL Joined the band in the fall of '75. The LP was recorded in March of '76. As the result of a personal conflict between Kenny and Steve, Kenny left the band shortly after the LP was recorded. The remaining members went on to form Cloudburst and Kenny has played in various bands through '04.

Archetypal mid-1970s local guitar & keyboard-rock which could be described as rural, bar-band, or southern rock depending on one's politics. Above average with a melodic orientation in the songwriting, which utilizes somewhat more complex structures than usual, with recurring shifts in both tempo and mood. The band is not aiming to steamroll the listener; instead the approach is relaxed, almost understated, with a tinny drum sound and lyrical guitar figures that embellish the usual generous Allman Brothers sound. Dryewater & Short Cross come to mind, although Ursula Creek is less inyer-face than both, yet to my ears don't manage to charge the style with the personality and warmth needed to approach something like Top Drawer. Apart from the solid guitar-work, organ, piano, and even synth is brought to good use. The occasional progressive excursion retains the unpretentious feel, and with a better vocalist this might have been truly memorable. Anyone who likes the LPs mention in this review ought to check this LP out, which deserves at least some of the recent attention it's been getting. (review by Patrick Lundborg)
