Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light and light+ spindle marks and no wear around the hole. This record plays superbly.

Brief Info: Uriah Heep’s fourth album and the first to feature cover artwork by Roger Dean. A band scorned by the critics of the day but their albums proved popular within the progressive rock field and this is arguably their best album. Whether the beautiful cover artwork attracted attention or not, this was their breakthrough album and it sold well. A lovely sleeve in impressive condition and a well produced record. Quality songs with catchy melodies all performed brilliantly, quite why those critics picked on them so harshly remains a mystery to me. This is a terrific first Island credit issue to please many fans and collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold with matt smooth surfaces, this includes the lyric inner and superb artwork by Roger Dean. It was printed and made in England by Tinsley Robor and includes the Island i distribution credits.

Cover Front: An impressive deep coloured front that has little to fault, it remains very fresh and attractive as-seen. Any marks, rubbing (corner tips) or blemishes are very few, light and faint, the lack of creasing always a major plus, I have seen few with less wear than this.

Cover Back: Generally similar with a gentle trace of rubbing near the top and a fine line mark (no split) on the left edge near the top, little else to fault. The lack of ring wear on this cover is a huge plus at is rarely seems to avoid it.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Very little to fault inside, this is really lovely.

Top Edges: Both very straight, flat and near parallel, any rub traces tiny, very few and faint, most on the back right corner tip.

Bottom Edges: Light patchy rubbing, all very comendable for matt storage edges. The back right corner has moderate rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked and folded edge that has barely any rubbing and remains straight. The back storage edges are mostly quite sharp, any thickening light towards the top of the back one, both are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Very solid, straight, uncompressed and folded square, so the edges meet up neatly and almost parallel. Most of any rubbing on the very ends and and a small rub on the top hinge towards the top. But the main surface remains unworn and clean, all text is fully present – the hinge rub has just avoided clipping the letters – strong and unfaded, this also beautifully centred as-seen.

Corners: Fairly light to moderate tip rubs, the most on the bottom right back, this more on the fold end that the actual tip. Very fine or better shape generally retained with no heavy knocks.

Cover Summary: A very fine all-round example of this highly wear-prone 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This highly attractive Roger Dean design cover should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: arguably better, this is one that often suffers major issues with splits, rubbing and ring wear, which this has avoided. Printed both sides, unlined and including lyrics. This one has very deep colour and both surfaces are clean and fresh with hardly a trace of creasing or ink loss. The deeply recessed top opening is crisp and neat with no tears, all edge folds are solidly, and naturally intact with no repairs. These originals include the ILPS 9193 number, they were never lined and quite fragile and delicate. One of the best I have seen in ages.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on evidence with any surface marks, very light, quite wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played reasonably lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive album. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
