(THIS WEEK’S AUCTION features what is for me, substandard photography! It was cloudy all week, so I had to shoot indoors. So live with it, already!)
HERE'S a rare opportunity for you to hear as many as four sides by one of the greatest unsung stand-up comics of all time, FRANK TINNEY.
In 1916, when "FRANK TINNEY'S FIRST RECORD" was made, comics were quick and clever, always on the "Qui Vivre," always hitting their marks. Tinney, meanwhile, pioneered a form of comedy that was at least fifty years ahead of its time: the Comedy of Ineptitude.
He IS a "BAD" comedian, who has to enter twice, who stumbles and backtracks, who argues with the bandleader, who takes excruciating time explaining his jokes which invariably fall apart. ALL with EXPERT timing! I hadn't seen a true devotee of this comic style until the '70s advent of ANDY KAUFMAN.
Frank Tinney smoothly plies his trade on these two disparate records:
American Columbia A1854, "FRANK TINNEY'S FIRST RECORD" backed by "FRANK TINNEY'S SECOND RECORD," from 1916. He bumbles his way through two sides, with Columbia stalwart bandleader CHARLES A. PRINCE (rarely heard in a speaking role!) as his "Ed McMahon" foil. The record is in clean E condition.
British Columbia 3490, from 1923. In "HELLO ERNEST" (parts one and two), Frank carries on much as he did seven years before, with his still-uproarious routine. This time, he "McMahonizes" Ernest, his British bandleader. EE- condition.
Any student of comedy is well advised to scrutinize these records for all they're worth!!

These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing! My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value. I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will! Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.” I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
