Description
This gorgeous and extremely rare LP from London/Ducretet Thomson (DTL 93057, English pressing, Red & Silver label, mono, boxed set – LP jacket housed inside surdy outer box) features the great Germaine Thyssens-Valentin, a pianist who has always enjoyed a cult following and thank to the efforts of Testament has enjoyed renewed appreciation on compact disc. All of her LPs remain quite rare, though this one is particularly special as it preserves the only concerto recording in her commercial discography, that of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major K. 488 – recorded in Salzburg in 1951 with Bernard Paumgartner conducting the Serenade Orchestra of the Salzburg Festival. It is a luminous reading, the Adagio slow movement particularly haunting, and stands comparison with those of Casadesus, Serkin, et al. It is paired with an equally captivating performance of Mozart's Symphony No. 29 in A Major K. 201, recorded at the 1956 Salzburg Festival. Paumgartner was a first-rate Mozartian and brings to both works a spirited élan, wit, and sparkle that is consistently inspired and refreshing.
CONDITION: Although the Thyssens-Valentin survives in more than one pressing, this arguably remains its most desierable, consisting of a standard LP jacket, housed in a handsome sturdy box – both bear the same beautiful tri-color artwork. The condition of the jacket is A- (two minor, discreet seamsplits, both measuring 1 1/2", one to the lower edge, the other to the left-edge; a very slight bend to the upper-right corner; otherwise the jacket is pristine, still retaining its fine laminate sheen and without owners' markings of any kind. The condition of the outer box is near-MINT (extremely minor discoloration, a former small price stamping to the inner side of the box; however, the box is without bends – all corners perfectly intact as is the spine where one can clearly read the album's contents). The condition of the LP itself, with its beautiful red and silver label is similarly near-MINT, playing without defect, and devoid of spindle trails.
All-in-all, very much a beautiful collector's copy of an extraordinary rarity, well worthy of this Mozart year.
