The Toys - 4 Track Acetate from the "A Lovers Concerto and Attack" Sessons. The 10" 45 speed disc in GOOD condition (see photos) and plays much better then it looks. Grade is visual. Tracks Do not seem to be final tracks so some changes might have been made in the final version. Tracks should be Baby's Gone, Hallelujah, What's Wrong with Me Baby and On BackStreet.  Listen to 60 second clips of each song to decide if this works for you. One of a kind acetate. Came in a plain brown paper sleeve that said "This copy is Sherries." Probably created during the actual sessions. I have not compared if they are the final same tracks as on the final album and this is a reference disc and shouldn't be the final master copy because of the pressing and the extra hole off center of the center hole. Odd to see an acetate with 2 tracks on each side and still very much playable all the way through.  This would probably have been Denny Randells personal copy from the 60's and never made it to "Sherrie".  Randell and Linzer wrote the songs. NOTE: CAN CERTAINLY USE A GOOD CLEANING AND I'LL LEAVE THAT TO YOU. MIGHT IMPROVE THE SOUND BUT AGAIN, THIS IS OLD AND LOOKS IT AND YET, SOUNDS PRETTY GOOD??!!

The Toys Sing "A Lover's Concerto" and "Attack!"

The Toys Sing “A Lover's Concerto” and “Attack!” was the sole album of the girl group The Toys. It was released in 1966 right after the success of the group's first two hits, both of which are mentioned in the album's title.

“Yesterday” is the only cover song on the album. The rest of the tracks are all original material that were written by the Toys' producers, Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell.

Although Barbara Harris sang lead for the majority of the album (the group's producers felt that her voice was the most commercialized), Barbara Parritt and June Montiero are each given a chance to sing lead as well, the former on “Hallelujah” and the latter on “Yesterday”. Parritt and Harris share the lead vocal duties on "Back Street."

From the other acetates we have in this collection, we believe it was either owned, created, produced or in the possession at one time of the world famous singer song writer Denny Randell. If you are familar with Denny Randell (what the heck is wrong with you if you don't!!!), Denny's work with Sandy Linzer is famous for writing a huge amount of songs starting with the monster hit "A Lover's Concerto, then Working my Way back To you by the Four Seasons (and lots more for them). His songs have been covered by the Monkees, the Cyrkle, Odyssey, Johnny Johnson, Smashmouth, P Diddy and lots more. Many of the records on consignment with us are G to NM condition. Please read our descriptions carefully so that there are no misunderstandings. Please read the paragraphs below to see what an acetate is and isn't. All the acetates willl show wear for the most part but listen to the sound clips in all our auctions of this items to decide if they are for you or not. We are NOT ACCEPTING them back for any reason other then damaged in transit and then only if you bought insurance!!!!!

WHAT IS AN "ACETATE"??

An acetate disc is cut prior to the cutting of the master disc which is used for mass production of records. Even though referred to as an "acetate", it is essentially an aluminium disc coated with a fine film of nitro-celluolose lacquer with no acetate in it at all!  They do not come in a frame. There is NO picture sleeve, and no special artwork on the record labels. Most acetates are 10" round, but the actual music record grooves are usually 7" in diameter. A 7" single is usually cut on a 10" disc, a 12" single or LP is cut onto a 12" disc. They're almost always single-sided (the other side is totally blank and shiny, with no grooves and no label).

This is used as a reference disc allowing the producer, engineer, artist and other interested parties to see how well the recording transfers to disc. Trying to tranfser some recordings to disc is like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, and so the cutting engineer must make some adjustments to the sound so that song on the tape fits within the confines of a record groove. This may include adjusting the overall level (volume), adjusting bass/treble, compressing the overall signal, etc so that the record sounds as good as possible when played on a variety of hi-fi systems. For example, if a song is excessively long, the cutting engineer will have to reduce the overall level of the disc. When such changes are necessary, the reference disc (or "acetate") allows the producer to check and approve these changes before the master disc is cut and sent off to the pressing plant where thousands of copies are pressed.

Once everyone is happy with the reference cut, the engineer will cut the MASTER LACQUER disc with the same changes and send it off to the pressing plant for mass production.

The lacquer coating on the disc is very soft and so the sound quality will deteriorate the more you play it. At first, the high frequencies will diminish and an increase of surface noise will be evident. If you thought records scratch and wear out easily, a lacquer disc is worse!

Reference cuts will usually appear as 10" discs with a 7"single cut onto them, or a 12" disc with either a 7" or a 12" cut. Reference discs will often have a second hole near the centre hole. This is to identify them as reference cuts and not master lacquers for production use.

So if you have an "acetate", you have a disc that was theoretically cut for the producer, engineer and artist to listen to.

Forever Vinyl adds: Normally, they are one of a kind and you won't see them again. Other then to have as reference, there wasn't any other reason to make more then a few. If you have one, you have something very unique to that recording.

Grading System: Cover/Record
Records are visually graded. 

Mint     Sealed, SS, or Mint: Is either new or still sealed.

NM    Near Mint: Has very minor difference then mint. We normally grade everything near mint, even if it's mint. It's better to undergrade then overgrade.

VG++     VG++, VG+:  Has been played but not a lot.  Maybe some light scuffs or scratches, but no major wear or defects.  Cover may have some light ring wear but not distracting. VG++,VG+ records should be good enough for almost any collector BUT THEY ARE NOT MINT.

VG    Very good:  Will have a decent amount of surface scratches and / or surface noise and / or pops & ticks, but will not be too distracting.   Cover will have wear.

G       Good:  Still plays through but will not look pretty, may be noisy but should play all the way through.

P:       Poor:  Trashed.
