The Smiths - 'Shoplifters of the World Unite' Mispressed UK 12"
Plays 'You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby' on A-Side

This obscurity has become extremely well-known amongs Smiths collectors but rarely actually seen. Although the original plans were to release 'You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby' as the A-side, these were scrapped in favour of 'Shoplifters of the World Unite'. Tantalisingly for collectors, a few copies mispressed with the original track listing escaped from the pressing plant into circulation. Upon first inspection these appear identical to the standard releases, bearing the same catalogue number and packaging. If you hold the vinyl next to a standard copy, however, you can just see that the A-side plays a different track due to the tiny differences in the groove patterns and density.
This mispressing made it into the Record Collector Smiths Top 100 rarities list at number 13 in 1992 when it was valued at 45.00 (see photo), and again more recently (when the list was reviewed) at number 25 at a value of 55.00 (see photo). Although estimates of its true value today vary, it is highly valued among collectors and a copy recently sold here on ebay at over 100 pounds (see here).
This is a good example of this collectable item; the vinyl is in excellent condition: there are some light to moderate surface marks in places which do not affect play. The labels are pristine and pretty much free of spindle marks. I have only played the record once to verify that it was indeed a mispressed copy. The inner and outer sleeves are pretty much in mint condition. Please see the accompanying pictures; note that the ID lettering is just on the pictures and not the item itself.
