Description
1969 was a difficult year for The Doors. After their infamous March 1st Miami concert (where Morrison allegedly "exposed" himself on stage) virtually all their tour dates were cancelled. No promoter would book them because of the "unknown" or "risk" factor involved. The band hit hard times and their popularity declined. Understandably there was a lot of pressure on Morrison and the other band members to "come back" with a strong album .....and they delivered with 'Morrison Hotel'. Released in February of 1970, 'Morrison Hotel' (EKS-75007) was The Doors' 5th studio album and I consider it to be one of their best. Beautifully produced by Paul Rothchild, it had all the elements that made this band so great.....strong melodies, bluesy and psychedelic, unforgettable lyrics....even with The Doors "brand" at an all-time low, the critics could not deny that the album was sensational.
The copy I am offering is a 1st U.S. pressing and specifically one that was pressed at the West Coast Monarch plant in Los Angeles. These coveted pressings rarely turn up and when they do they are usually found played to death. If you were going out to buy this record in February or March 1970 in California (where the band was from) this is the copy you would have found in stores.
Let me just say this: The audio is simply fantastic. It is balanced and somewhat "louder", stereo separation is more pronounced....more details are heard in the guitar and keyboards....there is more "snap" in the percussion. There is virtually no distortion even at loud volume....this is the way this album was meant to sound.
Gatefold Jacket: Near Mint.....as good as you'll probably find this iconic cover. Heavier than usual boards were used and due to the matt, rough-textured bond used for these early pressings, most copies are found with paper loss, ring wear, stains, and scuffing. This one has escaped all those problems. The spine is solid, the edges are clean.....a near-perfect example of this beautifully designed gatefold jacket.
Inner-Sleeve: Near Mint.....most, if not all early U.S. copies of this album will have this glossy, black inner-sleeve....with the Elektra Records logos on one side, and photos of the "new" Elektra recording studios on the other. This one is in exceptional shape....no tears or splits.
Record: Near Mint (-) ....a lovely shine to both sides of the heavyweight vinyl....only faint, superficial markings and hairlines can be distinguished under very strong light. I am certain this record has received very few plays. Perfect labels....no spindle marks. I listened to this record from start to finish and I can assure you.... it sounds incredible. You will be hard-pressed to find a better and cleaner sounding copy of this classic Doors album.
