The BEATLES "Yesterday and Today" 2nd State Butcher Cover
DESCRIPTION: The jacket shows signs of being previously taped (the tape has since been carefully removed but colorization from the tape still remains). The jacket also has seam splits, most prominently on the left side. The seams look like they have been repaired without damage or alteration to the cover. Ringo's black shirt can be seen through the paste-over cover (see pics--image with Ringo's shirt circled is covered in a protective plastic sleeve). The inner sleeve is original but has separated into two pieces (see pics). This record comes with a MoFi sleeve. The vinyl record is in Good+ condition, showing signs of scuffs and normal use but no scratches are visible. The record was pressed at the Los Angeles pressing plant according to the plant number (6) on the bottom-right of the rear of the jacket. Please reach out with any questions. Thanks!
This is an original Beatles' Yesterday and Today 2nd State Butcher Cover LP vinyl record originally released in June 1966. The original cover image depicted the band wearing white butcher smocks and covered with dismembered plastic baby dolls and pieces of raw meat. In the United States, Capitol Records printed approximately 750,000 copies of Yesterday and Today with the original cover before reactions from disc jockeys were outraged by the cover image, and most retailers found it so distasteful they refused to stock the LP. Capitol then contacted Epstein, who conceded to having the cover replaced with the trunk photo.
Despite Capitol's recall of the original LP, some distributors had already delivered stock to retailers, and copies were sold to customers in line with the scheduled 15 June release date. Shortly thereafter, Capitol released the version of the LP with the new trunk cover. Remaining copies of the original butcher cover LP's are now collector's items even with the new trunk cover pasted over the top of the butcher cover--these are considered 2nd state versions of the album.
Differences between 1st, 2nd and 3rd State covers:
1st State = unaltered/covered, completely original with the butcher image visible in its original state 2nd State = an LP that had the original butcher cover but was then covered with the trunk cover for censorship 3rd State = same as a 2nd state cover but peeled so that the original butcher image can be seen--results vary widely
