Up for sale is an infamous, highly historic piece of Beatles vinyl history: The Beatles – Alpha Omega Volume 2, a rare 4-LP bootleg box set released in late 1972 by Audio Tape, Inc. / TV Products.

This specific set features the vibrant original cover artwork with stylized pop-art color portraits of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, with "stereo" printed clearly across the center.

Historical Background: The Infamous "Alpha Omega" Incident

  • The TV Mail-Order Boom: In late 1972, Audio Tape, Inc. compiled a massive collection of Beatles group tracks and early solo hits. Exploiting loophole state copyright laws prior to 1972 federal legislation, they heavily advertised this box set across US commercial television and radio stations.

  • The $15 Million Lawsuit: The Beatles, Apple Records, Capitol Records, and manager Allen Klein immediately responded in early 1973 with a massive $15 million lawsuit. Production was shut down by court injunctions shortly after release, making surviving clean complete sets difficult to find.

  • Birth of the "Red" and "Blue" Albums: Demand for this bootleg box set was so overwhelming that it proved a massive market existed for a retrospective Beatles collection. To counter this unauthorized release, Apple and Capitol rushed out the official "1962–1966" (Red Album) and "1967–1970" (Blue Album) compilations in April 1973.
